Let’s face it, for the vast majority of us, we aren’t exactly pleased that the Premier League has stopped for the World Cup. Although it does give Graham Potter a little more time to address the current problems his side has and prepare for a January transfer window.
We have a month off though, and while many will be shunning the World Cup, instead partaking in other pastimes from watching the cricket to Christmas shopping, or placing their regular football bets elsewhere such as on the Casino 777 live casino, others will be tuning in to see how our Chelsea boys are getting on.
There will be plenty of Blues stars making their mark on the tournament, but who are the players we’re expecting to really shine in Qatar?
Edouard Mendy
Edouard Mendy has struggled to earn a place in the Chelsea side of late but he’ll be the Senegal number one, and the Africa Cup of Nations winners are going to be real dark horses this tournament, even without Sadio Mane in the side.
Mane out is a knock to their chances of making waves in the knockout rounds, but they have a solid base in Mendy and Chelsea teammate Kalidou Koulibaly, and they’ll be more than hopeful of progressing out of Group A.
Both are likely to shine and could be a solid back door that the Netherlands fail to break down, and we’re certainly excited and hopeful they’ll do both their club and country proud.
Kai Havertz
Kai is a key member of the German national side and they face a difficult task in their group, with Spain, Japan and Costa Rica, the latter two of which could cause upsets.
Havertz has a good goalscoring record for the national team and they do have an exciting forward line with him joined by the likes of Jamal Musiala, Serge Gnabry and Leroy Sane. They couldn’t get over the line against England at the Euros, but could be ones to watch, especially if they get a good result against Spain.
Raheem Sterling
Sterling is a favourite of Gareth Southgate’s and there are certainly similarities in how Sterling is entering this tournament compared to the European Championships. There were question marks then, and there are now with his form for the Blues having dropped of late.
The summer of 2021 saw him prove the doubters wrong though, and if Southgate sticks with him as part of that front three, then he could do so again and come back to Stamford Bridge completely rejuvenated.
Thiago Silva
If England doesn't win the World Cup, we’d love to see Brazil do it for Thiago. With over 100 caps for his country, Silva has been a stalwart in the centre of the Brazil defence since 2008 and he’s suffered plenty of heartbreak in World Cups during that time.
The South American nation are favourites to win the tournament, largely thanks the their incredible attacking threat. But Thiago Silva will be the cool head at the back, just as he is for Potter’s men, and it’d be a fitting final chapter of the legend’s career.
