High-quality full-backs have always been a prized commodity. They are pretty difficult to find, and clubs spend a lot of money until they find the quality they are looking for.
Chelsea fans know this all too well. Before the Blues found one of the best left-backs in the world, Ashley Cole, they spent a lot of money trying out different options. Asier Del Horno and Wayne Bridge were two natural options for that role but were not quite at Chelsea's level. Similarly, William Gallas played out of position on the left flank and even Paulo Ferreira had to play there from time to time until Cole arrived.
Something similar happened after Cole left Chelsea. Cezar Azpilicueta has played there as an inverted full-back, while Emerson Palmieri and Marcos Alonso have been unconvincing options, to say the least.
For Chelsea, finding a top-quality left-back was always similar to gambling. They invested a lot of money in the left-backs their scouts recommended but they didn't always win their wagers. The Chelsea board must have felt like sitting at the roulette wheel of some of the reviewed casinos that you can find when you visit here when they made their bids for players.
When they went for Cole the ball landed in the pocket they chose - a Straight win. However, when they went for Khalid 'Red Card' Boulahrouz, they must have seen that green zero pocket flashing in front of their eyes all season long.
Ben Chilwell - Chelsea's Long-Term Solution on the Left
However, it now seems like Chelsea have finally found a left-back that is the proper replacement for Ashley Cole. Ben Chilwell is all things that his predecessors weren't and then some. He is the best England left-back by a country mile, and it's easy to see why.
Like Cole, he comes as the finished product, so Chelsea don't have to worry whether he will turn out good or not. Similarly, just like Cole, Chilwell has played an instrumental role at a club that has been around the top of the EPL before coming to Chelsea.
He is rock-solid in defence, you will rarely find him out of position and is one of the main attacking outlets for the Blues. He is the modern marauding left-back that all teams want to have and is as complete as a full back can be.
Reece James Bossing the Right Flank
Chelsea had to go and buy that ideal left-back they needed, but their perfect right-back was closer to home. Reece James has always been touted as one of the most promising academy talents, and during his time on loan at Wigan, he proved that he is ready to take the step up.
When Frank Lampard gave James the chance to play, he took it with both hands. Cesar Azpilicueta started last season as Chelsea's first-choice right-back, but Reece James ended it as the undisputed king on the right-hand side.
Since then, he has been a regular fixture down the right and has been one of the most reliable Chelsea defenders this season. James is comfortable in possession, delivers some pinpoint crosses, is excellent in the air, and is an enthusiastic tackler.
The EPL has some excellent full-back pairings right now, which is quite a phenomenon, but it seems like Chelsea's men are slightly better than the likes of Alexander-Arnold and Robertson and others.
That's one of the many reasons why Chelsea fans can be excited about watching their team play both now and in years to come.
