Frankie and the Fickle Fans - Should Chelsea Stick with Lampard?

When Frank Lampard came back to Chelsea to manage the club, Blues' fans were ecstatic that one of their own was in charge of the club. Lampard's predecessor, Maurizio Sarri, may have won the Blues the Europe League title, but he was far from a popular figure at Cobham.

That wasn't the case with good old Lamps, though. Frankie was the club's record goalscorer, scoring 211 goals in a Blue shirt, won every title there was and was always a fan favourite.

Great Start

In his first season, he managed to blood some young academy talent, something that Chelsea fans always wanted to see. Mason Mount, Tammy Abraham, Reece James, and Fikayo Tomori all got into the first team, while Lampard also managed to earn the club a Champions League spot and was one step away from winning the FA Cup.

Those were reasons enough for the board to back the lad from Romford with a hefty transfer budget and a whole host of exciting players.

With all those star players coming in, fans started to expect bigger and better things from Chelsea, though. And for the first months of the 2020/2021 season, Lampard delivered just that. The Blues were Champions League group winners and were top of the EPL table after defeating Leeds at the start of December.

A Slump in Form

However, after that Leeds triumph, things started going downhill for the Blues. Their Boxing Day and New Year fixtures couldn't have gone any worse as they suffered two heavy losses against rivals Arsenal and Manchester City.

After the City defeat, Chelsea found themselves in ninth, seven points behind the league leaders. At that point, many fans were saying that they had seen enough from Lampard's Chelsea to know that he should go. They wanted Roman to act on impulse once again and to fire Lampard as soon as possible.

Why Staying Patient Now Will Pay Dividends Later?

Like a casino enthusiast that's down on his luck, fans believe that Chelsea should spend more money to get things back on track. According to these reactionary supporters, Chelsea need to sack Lampard, compensate him, go for a super-expensive international coach like Tomas Tuchel, and then back him with millions of pounds to bring the players he wants.

Needless to say, this is an expensive adventure to undertake, both for Chelsea and for that casino player. Instead, they both should reassess their options, take a look at the big picture, and then start thinking about what to do next.
