It’s been Chelsea’s busiest preseason in some time as Frank Lampard has rung the changes in order to make his side solid top four contenders and eventual title challengers.
He’s been busy strengthening in all departments, with a mixture of big-money moves, youth signings and free transfers. But which signings are expected to be the best come the end of the 2020/21 season?
We’ve reviewed all Frank’s new recruits and below you’ll find who think we will be among the signings of the season come May next year…
It seemed that a new goalkeeper would be a necessity this summer after faith in Kepa has been slipping for some time. The Spaniard started the season but the arrival of Mendy from Rennes at the end of September has seen the 28-year-old Senegal keeper pushed straight into the first team.
He picked up an injury on international duty just days ago however, and if serious it could give Kepa another chance to claim his position as the Blues number one.
Mendy looks a good signing though and for £21.6million could prove a steal compared to the amount they forked out for the man he’s replacing.
Werner has yet to pick up his first Premier League goal as yet but its only a matter of time and the German striker will come good. In the football betting markets, he’s priced at 20/1 to finish top scorer, and if he starts to find a bit of form, it could be a worthy punt given he bagged 34 goals last season for RB Leipzig.
Despite initially being towards the top with many predictions, including the betting tips on 101greatgoals, Werner is now behind the likes of Danny Ings, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Son Heung-min according to the bookmakers, but we expect him to find the back of the net and really kick-start his season and boost the Blues’ chances of a top three or four finish.
Tammy Abraham, who was a top scorer contender at the beginning of last season, has fallen down the charts since the arrival of Werner, and is now priced at 33/1.
What we do need to understand is that it may take a while for the 24-year-old to settle in but he’ll be a solid investment and a key player for Lampard for years to come.
Ben Chilwell
Chilwell is one of the best left backs in the Premier League and even at £45million looks a good investment given the price of domestic signings these days.
The 23-year-old was instrumental in Leicester City’s success last season and he’s almost certain to be England’s first choice left back for years to come too.
While Marcos Alonso has been a key player for the Blues in recent years, Chilwell is a worth replacement and will fit into Lampard’s style of play moving forward.
Kai Havertz
Havertz has proven a significant investment for Chelsea at £72million and has already drawn mixed opinion. Liverpool legend Steve Nicol has accused the 21-year-old for going missing in games, while many fans have been hugely impressed with his talent, particularly during his recent run out for Germany where he provided two assists.
He’s of course got plenty to learn, but the youngster could prove himself to be one of the most influential signings of recent years. The hope is he’ll develop into a player that has a similar impact to Hazard. Time will tell on that, but he’s had a solid start to Premier League life and will no doubt be a key player in that attacking midfield role throughout this season.
Malang Sarr
While Malang Sarr won’t likely appear in a Chelsea shirt this season, his arrival has certainly got people talking. A free transfer from Nice, the 21-year-old looks a great signing for the future.
The 6ft centre half has signed on a five year deal, with him spending that first year out on loan at Porto where he’ll pick up some valuable experience. He was a regular for Nice over four seasons in the first team and every Blues fan will watching from a distance to see how he’s doing in Portugal. A good season may prove to be one of Lampard’s best signings this summer, even with no real impact on his own team.
