At last, the Nations League break is over and we can all focus back on the Premier League with Chelsea taking on Southampton at 3pm on Saturday at Stamford Bridge. Could it be the first time that we see both Christian Pulisic and Hakim Ziyech involved this season?
It’s fair to say that Chelsea’s opening to this years campaign has been stop-start at best with a good opening day win against Brighton, poor performance and defeat against Liverpool, a disappointing draw with West Brom, and more points lost, but we managed to play well and beat Crystal Palace in our last game 4-0. Seven points from a possible twelve is a decent return but bearing in mind the investment made in the first-team squad this summer, we have expected more with Chelsea highlighted by the best football tipsters as one of the teams to present Liverpool and Manchester City with more of a challenge for the Premier League title this season.
Frank Lampard and every other manager in the Premier League, during these unprecedented times, has had to get his squad prepared for the new season a just couple of weeks which was due to the delayed finish to the previous season. Players started the season unfit and it has been a case of managing these issues with the playing staff available for selection on a game-by-game basis.
Two of those players who have missed out to this point have been Christian Pulisic and Hakim Ziyech who is regarded by most as key components of the strongest possible eleven for Chelsea. As a result, we have seen the likes of Timo Werner, Kai Havertz, and Mason Mount play roles that do not feel natural to them but have done the best they can bearing in mind the current circumstances everyone has had to deal with to this point.
For Christian Pulisic, it has been a difficult period having suffered a hamstring injury in the FA Cup Final in which he had opened the scoring and had been playing well. He has proven to be an integral part of the Chelsea attack and has filled the gap left by Eden Hazard’s departure for Real Madrid. We have seen moments of magic from Captain America last year and have been looking forward to his return with a glimpse of him this season as a late substitute in our last match against Crystal Palace.
For Hakim Ziyech, an injury picked up in our one and only pre-season game against Brighton has delayed his impending arrival into the Chelsea first team and it’s another one that everyone is looking forward to seeing. That wand of a left-foot and his creative instincts is something we all crave and will hopefully thrive upon once he comes in and is an established member of the team.
We have seen the arrival of Timo Werner, Kai Havertz, Ben Chilwell, Thiago Silva, and Eduoard Mendy, and all make their Chelsea debuts. It now time for Hakim Ziyech to do the same and with Christian Pulisic force Frank Lampard’s thinking into an attacking 4-2-3-1 formation moving forward to get the best out of all the attacking options we have at the club this season starting with Southampton this weekend!
