It's the first time since the arrival of Abramovich and Mourinho that I've been excited about the signings we've made. The core of that side lasted a decade and was full of such talent that I don't believe a single player in our squad last season would have got a place in it. Since then we've bought badly and seem to have gone for quantity over quality; not this time around. Man for man I don't see a better side in the Premiership, but they will take time to gel.
ReplyDeleteWhilst delighted with the transfer dealings, I'm not sure we'll make the top four. It's not just about us but others have also improved. Aside from last season's top two, Arsenal, Spurs and United will all be stronger and there's always a "surprise team" or two.
If we had someone like Pope in goal I'd feel more confident of a top four finish but even then there is work to be done.
Success for me will be how quickly we gel and that we improve as the season progresses. Something which didn't happen last season. A good marker will be where we finish in relation to Arsenal. We're much stronger than them in terms of player quality but Arteta has been very impressive as a coach. He sorted a defence that was actually worse than ours without any change in oersonnel and has won the FA cup and charity shield. We finished the season with the same strengths and weaknesses with which we started it. For me the jury is still out on Lampard and co.
