It had been well expected that teams would experience some difficulties returning to a regular schedule of play following lockdown - waning fitness and the lack of opportunity to play as a team for a couple of months would certainly take its toll and it had been expected that early upsets would come - and that’s exactly what we have seen so far. Recently Chelsea did bounce back from their 3-2 defeat against 16th place West Ham, to then win 3-0 against 17th place Watford - but with some tougher challenges on the way, some consistency may need to be found - the Premier League is already over with Liverpool already being technically crowned champs, but these last few games may at least help provide that consistency that is still missing but also give a glimpse to how other teams are shaping up and whether or not they’re also finding those same consistency issues.
Aside from games against Palace and Norwich, the next few scheduled games for Chelsea are looking quite tough, with one of the remaining games against prem leaders Liverpool, putting on a similar performance to what has been seen recently may not be enough to get the job done. It isn’t unique to just Chelsea either, however, as we’ve seen this across many of the teams in the prem as they try to settle back into play, leading to the middle of the pack being extremely close, something that’ll likely remain until the end of the season - as mentioned above, these last few games before the end of July may be an important time for many of these middle of the pack teams in finding some footing and may be the determining factor between a great 20/21 start or more of the same upsets as we’ve been seeing through May and June when the season got back underway.
This has been an interesting time for punters too, despite changes to some gambling laws within the UK such as a recent ban to credit card gambling alongside further changes to the gamstop initiative which had left many players unable to participate, many sports betting sites not on gamstop were very much prepared for these games getting underway again but caution should be taken - the increased schedule at what these games have been played at has further caused uncertainty. Given the rocky results lately it may be prudent for many to wait until the 20/21 season begins in September before betting again.
Either way, the season has progressed very quickly because of this increased schedule and we’re already approaching the end - Chelsea have six games remaining with the goal for the season to be completed by August so that preparations can be made for the 20/21 season, although this season is already over for Chelsea these last six games could go a long way in preparing for the next, and a good end here could be what leads to a great start in two or three months time.
