Frank Lampard's side look like they are going strength to strength with their transfer business so far. Despite being highly active in the market, a Champions League spot is crucial if they are to lure more players to Stamford Bridge this summer.
Timo Werner opted to snub Jurgen Klopp's recently crowned champions in favour of a move to Stamford Bridge, where presumably, time on the pitch was a huge pull for the German international.
Hakim Ziyech has also been another huge signing for Lampard's side, having caught the eye in the Champions League in recent years. With Pedro more than likely on his way out of the Bridge and with Willian getting on, this was one hell of a coup for the Blues.
Lampard's far from done in the market, which has explicitly been made clear, but in order for them to be a force next season and challenge both Liverpool and Manchester City, they will need to secure a Champions League spot. The Blues are expected to achieve this in the Premier League betting as they are as low as 1/7, even if they have been inconsistent since the restart. Manchester United have started strong since the lockdown, whilst Leicester have crumbled and have lost serious momentum, especially after they were looking to secure second place behind Liverpool.
There were a lot of critics when Lampard was offered the job, after just one season managing Derby County in the Championship. After losing the play-off final to Aston Villa, Chelsea were keen to secure their former hero and it has proven to be a success, so far. The ex-Blues midfielder clearly has the respect of the dressing room, a key aspect of the modern game. Players want to play for him and that is evident to see, even with the fixtures being played out behind closed doors.
Despite some solid results on the pitch, there have been questions about whether Lampard's recent signings will fit in to his style of play. The Chelsea boss has been quick to defend them, believing they both have the ability to adapt and have a real impact at the Bridge next season.
And there's no reason to suspect otherwise, with Lampard introducing several youth players into his squad this season, as well as getting the best out of Jorginho, who wasn't a popular figure in his first Premier League campaign.
It is clear that Chelsea mean business as of next season, and they are clearly willing to splash the cash in order to compete once again. However, much of their success in the window will depend on the success of the current playing squad achieving a Champions League spot. If Lampard's side are able to finish in the top four, there is an argument to be made that they can look to compete with both Liverpool and Manchester City, and sooner, rather than later.
