The Premier League is back, the FA Cup is back and we await confirmation of the plans for how the remainder of the Champions League games will be played out to the end of the season with UEFA working on the idea of a possible mini-tournament. It’s clear it will re-commence so I just wanted to put together this article confirming the five Chelsea players who are key to our chances to overcome our 0-3 deficit against Bayern Munich. For the latest odds on Chelsea’s chances, check out Parimatch who rate our chances.
Let’s start by saying that this is no easy task for Chelsea with Bayern Munich installed as firm favourites to go through to the next round having home advantage and playing well at the top of the Bundesliga. In the game at Stamford Bridge, Bayern really showed that they were a class apart and it was a footballing lesson. The thing is, football as they say is a funny old game and a football match is not over until the Referee blows the full-time whistle.
So to Chelsea’s chances, anything is possible and we have to be optimistic. Here are those players I believe we need to look out for and those that would be key against Bayern Munich.
Kepa Arrizabalaga.
Kepa has not had it easy this season and suffered a dip in form leading to Frank Lampard deciding to play Willy Caballero instead. However, in the last few games leading to the postponement, Kepa played really well and looked confident, assured, and somewhere near his best. He will need to be on top form to keep a clean sheet.
Toni Rudiger.
Many Chelsea fans believe that he is the lynchpin of the Chelsea defence having made his return from injury. Although some of his performances have been questionable with the likes of Kurt Zouma and Fikayo Tomori impressing earlier in the season, Rudiger is a natural leader and the most physical defender we have at the club. We need him to be on his game and at his best if we can stop the Bayern attack.
Mateo Kovacic.
Without a doubt the player of the season for Chelsea to this point, a steal from Real Madrid and someone who has flourished under Frank Lampard since he arrived. Blessed with skill and ability but with a willingness to work hard without the ball, Kovacic will need to be an influence in front of our back four AND moving forward with the ball if we are to make a sensational comeback. Plenty has been written and said of the Jorginho/Kante position in midfield, Kovacic in my view is now just as important.
Christian Pulisic.
The American attacker has really hit the ground running this season at Chelsea only to have his progress curtailed by injury. The break-in football has given him a chance to recover, get himself fit, and really to play the remaining games which is a massive bonus for Chelsea.
Someone who is well aware of the Bundesliga and Bayern Munich, Pulisic has already shown this season who much of an attacking threat he can be with important goals along the way.
Tammy Abraham.
We can talk all day about Bayern Munich’s attacking players but if we are to have any chance in the game, we need to score goals. I personally believe that their defence is not as solid as it could be, and Tammy has a chance to shine on the biggest stage.
He has already had an outstanding season so far, goals in this one would be sensational.
