Frank Lampard came into Chelsea to take over as Manager in the summer with a single years’ experience managing Derby County in the Championship. The dream signing for the supporters and the dream job for Frank Lampard himself, nine months on, how would you rate his first season in charge at Chelsea so far?
It’s important before we start to think back to last summer and what our expectations were for the season ahead once we knew that Frank Lampard was confirmed coming in. Can you recall what you thought to yourselves back then? There were all sorts of bets on whether or not he would be successful with others heading to america casinos to roll the dice on Frank just as it seemed the Chelsea board were doing. However, it’s something that I believe people would have thought about at some stage over the next few days with there also bound to have been questions asked by friends, family and work colleagues of what you thought he would be like as the manager and what would be classed as an acceptable finish.
For me, I said that if we take everything into consideration with Eden Hazard leaving, the youngsters coming into the side as we could not spend any money and the fact that Frank Lampard himself lacked experience as a manager first and foremost, but lacks Premier League managerial experience, I would have hoped that we could challenge for the top six as the minimum. As far as the Champions League and domestic cup competitions goes, I would have said to qualify out of the group stages of the CL and to put up a challenge for the domestic cups.
Nine months down the line and we are above expectations as far as the Premier League has played out. Yes, I am aware that other sides have been poor this season which has benefitted us from when we have had disappointing results and dropped points. However, we remain fourth on merit which is an important point, earning the right to sit in that position. If the season is ended now, we qualify for the Champions League next season. If they decide the scrap the season and carry over last season’s finish – we qualify again. Of course, this is with a transfer ban that was in place until January and no signings in the January window.
The Champions League we won the group which again was great. We came up against a fantastic Bayern Munich side which thumped us at home 0-3 and still have the second leg to play (and would be better off hedging our bets over at casinojoka if we are honest) but we got through the group.
The League Cup is the least of our priorities and not a real concern and we continue our good form in the FA Cup over recent years by reaching the quarterfinals away to Leicester which in my view is a wide-open game.
We have seen the likes of Reece James, Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount, Billy Gilmour, Fikayo Tomori, Callum Hudson-Odoi, and Christian Pulisic implemented into our first team, but most importantly of all, we have seen Mateo Kovacic excel under the manager and is the stand-out performer for me this season.
Overall, we have had our ups and downs this year, poor performances and some fantastic performances with great results. It’s the first of a long-term project that we see these youngsters continue to grow together to form the all-important spine of our first team that you then build around in the future.
Without question, it’s exciting times for us as Chelsea fans with the young squad we have and potential exciting signings this summer.
As far as this season goes to this point? It’s an 8/10 for Frank Lampard from me. What score out of ten would you give him?
