This
time last week Chelsea had been written off, facing a crisis within the squad
with the number of players either injured or suspended, and being tipped to be
knocked out of the FA Cup in addition to the top four within the space of four days.
Social
Media timelines were filled with negativity, comment being made on players who
offer little or nothing to our side (not my opinion) and constant bitching
about something. Chelsea found themselves on a downward spiral (according to
the detractors) with little signs of life to rescue our season and breathe life
into it.
For
the rest of us, those I like to call realists, people who have a sense of
perspective and who choose to step away from the detractors; we can see that this
season 19/20 is a project and a work in progress. We can see that these players
being introduced into the first team on a regular basis this year will develop
into what we hope will be an exciting, young side that will challenge at the
top of the table in the next two to three years.
Heading
into the Liverpool (FA Cup) and Everton (Premier League) games at Stamford
Bridge this past week we had our concerns. Despite a good win against Tottenham
(Premier League), we had suffered defeat to Manchester United (Premier League),
Bayern Munich (Champions League) and had to fightback against Bournemouth (Premier
League) to rescue a point having taken the lead first.
With
important players out injured including our first-choice midfield starter N’Golo
Kante for Liverpool, Ruben Loftus-Cheek working his way back to full fitness
having missed the whole season so far with an Achilles injury, Christian
Pulisic and Callum Hudson-Odoi injured alongside our top scorer Tammy Abraham, things
seemed to be piling up against us as we headed into the Liverpool & Everton
game.
With
our backs seemingly against the wall, everything against us, our first-team
squad has pulled together, worked hard on the training ground with Frank
Lampard and his coaching team to devise a plan and approach to both games to
give us the best opportunity to try and get a positive result. Literally none
of us could have imagined what would play out in both games.
With players in the side who have found themselves dropped due to poor form, players in and out for the most part this season, players who have not been given the game time they need and one youngster in particular who had been given some exposure this season already, everyone has literally stepped up to deliver two big wins to silence those negative keyboard warriors!
The
Liverpool game was impressive enough winning 2-0. Yes, they had their moments
in the first half, but Chelsea took their chances and dominated the game
especially in the second half with the champions elect offering little or nothing
to give us any real problems. The likes of Kepa, Billy Gilmour, Kurt Zouma and Ross
Barkley all showed a real hunger and desire to perform which was great to see
with Gilmour the star of the show on the night.
So,
to Everton and as stated above, in addition to all the injury problems we had
to face for Liverpool, we now had ALL THREE of our midfield starters out with
Mateo Kovacic and Jorginho joining N’Golo Kante on the sidelines through injury
and suspension. We knew with the options we had left that Billy Gilmour would
be called upon to make his first Premier League start alongside Ross Barkley
and Mason Mount. Not an ideal solution but with no alternative.
Once
again on the day everyone stepped up, everyone raised their game and took the
chance they had been given to impress. Chelsea performed above and beyond any
of our expectations heading into the game. We dominated Everton, we restricted
their attacking threat and played on the front foot throughout. A victory by
FOUR goals and four different goal-scorers highlighted just how well this team put
together through necessity alone had delivered.
What a difference a week makes in football and on Social Media. Those detractors have been silenced (for now) and it’s good to see. There is a positive feeling about the club again having seen the potential we have here waiting in the wings for the most part having played second fiddle to those who were forced out through injury. Those sitting in the stands would have been celebrating with the rest of us on one hand but on the other taking notice of their individual performances – by doing exactly what had been asked of them the manager.
The
thing is, Frank Lampard is quick to point out just how well we have played in
games for the majority of the season. The problem being putting the ball in the
back of the net whilst keeping a solid defence. We have only seen a couple of
really disappointing performances this season and that’s important for those
keyboard warriors to remember.
In
the past week everything has come together when we least expected it to do so
and now, we feel positive again about our top four chances under Frank Lampard.
If he does deliver this year with everything, he had to deal with coming in (Eden
Hazard sold, transfer ban, no January signings and having to fill the squad
with youngsters) it would be a fantastic achievement.
It’s
good to be a Chelsea fan right now and long may it continue!
