With everything that’s going on right now, the start of March might seem like a lifetime ago. With the cycle of bad news that’s been churning around us since the end of January - the fires in Australia, the flooding here in the UK and now the COVID-19 epidemic - the football season really getting into full swing served as a great escape.
It hasn’t all been great news, with a string of mixed performances there was still a little room for a silver lining to shine its way through - a good performance against Liverpool and Everton gave fans something to look forward to, and an upcoming game against Aston Villa looking to be a good opportunity to continue showing good form, the looming cloud of Bayern and recovering from the 3-0 defeat in February was still looming.
The current standing is that all games until May have been postponed, with no information on when they may take place - the games throughout May are currently keeping their normal schedule, however time will only tell if this will remain the case amongst the uncertainty. One question that may be on the lips of many, is what will happen during the off-season? If the postponement is extended throughout May, will games be starting in what would have been the regular off-season or will the delay continue through until June and July.
The other question we may still need an answer for is whether or not the players will be fit enough to return for their regularly scheduled games in May when the lockdowns across the country are lifted, as all training is brought to a standstill during this time, we may find that the players aren’t in adequate shape to play when all is said and done.
Finding something to do in the meantime may be difficult as the epidemic isn’t only affecting English football - or football as a whole at all. Sporting events all over the world are being countries, the biggest casualty recently being the olympics. For those who are missing out on their betting fix in the height of the football season, there are still options open to you as online casinos are doing really well during the crisis, you can find some of the better ones here - but it may be quite some time before we see regular betting companies return to business as usual as there’s still a lot of uncertainty around when any sport entertainment may return.
For now, however, all we can do is wait and hope - with modern technologies that see daily use like WhatsApp and live streaming platforms, the players may be able to stay in touch with their support staff and keep working from home in an effort to stay in shape for when the season does continue. And with any luck in the coming days or weeks we will receive some information on what may happen during what would be the regular off-season, as after such a long layoff, it’s hard to imagine anyone involved be it the organisations or the players themselves would want any extra downtime from what has already been had.
