Following on from another disappointing result on Saturday, Chelsea head into a two-week winter break. The break comes at the perfect time for Frank Lampard and Chelsea.
Chelsea have stuttered of late trying to find a level of consistency. Dropped points, missed opportunities to score and at times a real lack of goal-scoring opportunities created, we find ourselves at an important crossroads in our season as we (somehow) sit fourth in the Premier League with a four-point gap to Tottenham.
The next two weeks gives Frank Lampard and his management team time to reflect on the season so far, where things need to improve in-game and to recharge their batteries. It’s important that they can motivate the players again, to come together and look to solve the issues we have as a unit moving forward.
As for the players themselves, they also need to re-evaluate their own performances to look at where they can continue to work to improve because in my view, a couple of those who have featured quite prominently are beginning to show signs of fatigue. Mason Mount and Tammy Abraham are showing signs that they need to be rested and being so young it’s important that they have that time to avoid a burn-out.
With the transfer window closing, no signings and obvious frustration from Frank Lampard, Chelsea need to take stock of what we have, where are strengths and weaknesses are to then hopefully decide on the way forward between now and the end of the season. Ruben Loftus-Cheek returning to fitness in the next few weeks will give everyone a massive boost to provide a genuine box-to-box midfield option.
Our squad is good enough in my view to finish inside the top four. We have proven at different times this season that we have real quality and can take the game to anyone we face. We just need to try and find that level of consistency we have really been lacking which has cost us a number of points so far. The question is how do we find it?
Frank Lampard needs to decide on his best eleven players and stick with them from week-to-week which would be the first step. Players will get used to playing with each other, they will get to know their movements and their personal traits that will only benefit the side. We cannot keep rotating players in and out of the team as it unsettles everything.
There are plenty of issues that need to be resolved. There are weaknesses within our team which we are well aware of and there is plenty of work to be done to ensure we can finish in the top four this season which would be unbelievable at the start. The good thing is that we can only improve from this point forward and you have to believe in Frank Lampard to turn things around.
It’s not yet all doom and gloom when it comes to Chelsea but these two weeks have come at just the right time!
