Chelsea progressed through as runners-up from Group H and will now face off against German champions Bayern Munich in the round of 16. They will be looking to win the competition for the second time, following their victory back in 2012. This victory saw them beat Bayern Munich on penalties in the final. Chelsea were also victorious last season in the Europa league, when beating rivals Arsenal in the final. This meant they won the competition for the second time in the club’s history.
Chelsea were originally drawn against Valencia, Ajax and Lille in Group H. This was one of the most competitive of the Champions league groups, with Ajax starting as the favourites to progress through as group winners. This was no surprise, considering their run to the semi-finals last year. As expected Lille finished bottom and only picked up one point from their six matches played.
Valencia surprisingly topped the group, following a 1-0 victory away at Ajax on matchday six. Chelsea then followed them through as runners up, as Ajax dropped into the Europa league by just a point. Chelsea finished qualification having picked up 11 points from a possible 18, winning three, drawing two and losing once.
Chelsea now face off against Bayern Munich in the round of 16 and will start as the underdogs. You can now place your bets for Royal Ascot and for this fixture. Both are huge upcoming events. The first match between the pair will be taking place on the 25th of February inside Stamford Bridge. The return leg will then be played on the 18th of March inside the Allianz Arena.
This represents a real test for Chelsea, as Bayern Munich now look much improved following their stuttering start to the season. They are not only challenging for their eighth domestic title in succession but will be looking for their sixth Champions league title. There last coming back in 2013. This also puts Bayern Munich amongst the most successful sides in the history of the competition.
Bayern produced the most impressive qualification through to the knockout stages from any other side. They finished as the only side to take maximum points, in a group that included Tottenham, Olympiacos and Red Star. Bayern also scored a competition high of 24 goals, also conceding just five over the six matches played. This was a very impressive qualification that also saw them beat last season’s finalists Tottenham twice, including a 7-2 away victory in London.
This now sets up for a fascinating clash with Chelsea, as two of Europe’s biggest sides face off.
