There are plenty of names being linked with Chelsea as potential signings this month, but just how many of these stories have any genuine substance? Who out of all these is looking the most likely?
As predicted, the press have stepped into overdrive with all sorts of names being linked with Chelsea in this transfer window now that Chelsea have had their transfer ban overturned. What is important now as a Chelsea fan is to ensure that you can seperate those that seem to be genuine, to those that are just plain rubbish and pure speculation.
It’s clear that as Chelsea have struggled to find consistency in these last few months, that we need to strengthen the squad in key areas to ensure that we have competition for places in the team. At the moment, certain areas seem to be tied down which, in some cases isn’t a bad thing. When you find yourselves dropping points in games we should be winning because our levels of performance isn’t good enough, to have competition in key areas should keep everyone on their toes knowing that they could be dropped for the next game. That’s key for any transfer window in my view, you MUST bring in someone who WILL provide genuine competition for a starting place in the team and not someone who comes in just to make up the numbers because that does not help anyone.
So to the players being linked with Chelsea in the last 24-48 hours and how we rate the link to Chelsea, if they would bring that competition needed and finally, if there seems to be genuine interest from Chelsea.
Ben Chilwell, 23, Defender, Leicester City.
Chilwell has been someone who has worked his way into contention with England and to be linked with the biggest clubs in England over the past few seasons. Now established at both club and international level, he is being touted to be willing to take the next step and join one of the so-called top six. It's being reported that he favours a move to Manchester City but wants to see what happens with Pep Guardiola beyond the current season before any decision is made with Leicester currently second in the Premier League.
Reported fee: £60-70m
Link rating: Possible.
Dani Olmo, 21, Midfielder, Dinamo Zagreb.
Olmo has caught the attention of some of the big clubs around Europe with his performances for the Croatian side this season. Described as a “wonderkid” he has reportedly caught the interest of Barcelona also.
Eight goals and seven assists so far this season from twenty-two appearances.
Reported fee: £34m
Player Quote: It's very simple – (I want) a club where I will play.Because I am still young and for me it is most important that I have minutes."
Link rating to Chelsea: Poor.
Moussa Dembele, 23, Striker, Olympique Lyonnais.
It was at Celtic that he caught everyone’s attention with his goals. He got himself a move to Lyon and has scored ten goals so far this season. Chelsea have reportedly offered £34m and Olivier Giroud for Dembele.
Reported fee: £34m
Quote from Lyon: “OL would like to reaffirm its wish, as in the summer of 2019, to keep Moussa Dembele. The club has full confidence in Moussa and counts in particular on him to build a successful team for the seasons to come.”
Link rating: Possible.
Wilfried Zaha, 27, Winger, Crystal Palace.
Having made his name at Palace in his first spell at the club, Zaha made the move to Manchester United and for one reason or another, it never worked out for him and he returned to Crystal Palace. Since his return he has been a revelation and is now looking for a second chance at a top club.
Reported fee: £80m
Quote from Roy Hodgson: Wilfried is not for sale. Basically, I don't need assurances, we aren't trying to sell Wilfried Zaha. We want to keep Wilfried Zaha. What assurances can people give? I know no-one [at the club] is anxious to sell Wilfried Zaha.'
Link rating: No chance!
Jadon Sancho, 19, Winger, Borussia Dortmund.
Sancho has been a revelation in Germany and has forced his way into Gareth Southgate’s England side ahead of Euro 2020. He has nine goals and eight assists so far this season. However, Dortmund have had their issues so far this season and Sancho has reportedly been made to feel like a “scapegoat” and wants to leave. Plenty of big clubs are watching his situation with interest.
Reported fee: £100-£127m.
Link rating: No chance in January. Maybe next summer.
Philippe Coutinho, 27, Attacking Midfield, Bayern Munich (loan) - Barcelona (parent club).
It appears that Barcelona could be willing to offload Philippe Coutinho if Bayern Munich are not willing to take up the option of signing him on a permanent deal with his loan from Barcelona due to expire next summer. Having not made the impact in La Liga that had been expected, Barcelona would be willing to let him go with Chelsea the long-term reported admirers of the Brazilian.
Reported fee: £85m
Link rating: Poor.
Timo Werner, 23, Striker, RB Leipzig.
Werner has caught the attention of Europe’s top brass with his goalscoring exploits in Germany. Scoring 19 goals in 37 games last season to 23 goals in just 24 games this season, Werner has been linked with the likes of Liverpool and Manchester United in recent weeks. However, it looks as though Liverpool have pulled out of the race to sign him and as for Manchester United? Why would you want to go there right now with no Champions League football?
Reported fee: £40m
Link rating: Highly Likely!
Isco, 27, Attacking Midfield, Real Madrid.
Isco has fallen out of favour and is looking for a move away from Madrid. He has made just thirteen appearances in all competitions this season and reports state that Real are willing to do business and cash in on a player who has struggled to make a position in the team his own since he arrived. Arsenal are also reportedly interested.
Reported fee: £44m
Link rating: Poor.
Gabriel Barbosa, 23, Striker, Inter Milan.
Barbosa has just returned to Milan after a successful loan spell in Brazil with Flamengo scoring 34 goals and 11 assists from 43 games lifting the “Copa Libertadores” scoring two late goals beating River Plate in the final. It’s unclear the situation with Barbosa and Inter Milan as we need to see what Antonio Conte’s intentions will be but he is definitely someone who has caught people's attention in recent months.
Reported fee: £40m
Link rating: Possible.
Fyodor Chalov, 21, Striker, CSKA Moscow.
Reportedly linked with Chelsea to step in as the reported “back-up” to Tammy Abraham, Chalov is a name that has suddenly appeared as linked with Chelsea. Much cheaper than alternatives above, prepared to settle for a place on the bench, is this link purely because Roman Abramovich has his visa back?
Reported fee: £20m
Link rating: Poor.
So there you have it, most of the names that have been linked with Chelsea in the past 24-48 hours and my take on the substance/credibility of the stories. What do you think and who would you like to see at Chelsea in January?
