He’s not the first and will definitely not be the last, but Danny Drinkwater signed for Chelsea as a Premier League winner with Leicester and someone that played a key role in their title winning success at odds of 5000-1. So why has it all gone wrong since his move to Chelsea?
Having cut short his loan spell at Burnley who decided against taking up the option to extend to the end of the season, Drinkwater has today signed on loan for Aston Villa until the end of the season and received instant praise from Villa boss Dean Smith citing the fact that he is a Premier League winner full of experience and will improve the options he has at the club drastically.
Looking at Aston Villa from the outside in it’s a great move for Danny D. Having come up from the Championship last season, they would always look to improve their options with tried and trusted names with Premier League experience to help bolster their chances of avoiding relegation. Drinkwater will bring his knowledge, know-how and leadership to the side whilst being given regular first-team football having spent a considerable amount of time on the sidelines or in the stands at Chelsea starting with Antonio Conte’s second season followed by Maurizio Sarri last year.
This pre-season a third manager in charge Frank Lampard had made it clear that everyone would start with a clean slate and a chance to earn their place in the squad. It looks like for a third time in-a-row Drinkwater has been deemed surplus to requirements and farmed out on loan. Why has that happened and continues to happen?
You would have to imagine that he would have the right mentality knowing just what it takes to win the Premier League. Or, is it the attitude that is the problem?
On his day in my eyes Drinkwater was one of the most consistent midfielders in the Premier League and proved to be the perfect foil for N’Golo Kante playing alongside him. Both in tandem with each other proved to be a massively influential part of that side that defied all odds. You would think that with both now at Chelsea in Antonio Conte’s second season that there would have been an opportunity for both to play together again here but it never happened.
I keep thinking to myself that it would be hard to believe that someone like that would simply down tools but having won the title and was handed a handsome pay-packet at Chelsea I guess it could happen. I like to think otherwise and it was just a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
We will never know why it hasn’t happened for Danny Drinkwater at Chelsea and it is a shame. We wish him all the best for the remainder of the season at Aston Villa.
