After Chelsea’s victory over Hull City in the FA Cup last night 2-1, Frank Lampard, for the first time in a post-match interview, expressed pure frustration at our lack of goals and killer instinct. Could this be a pivotal moment in our season?
All of us have been frustrated as of late with our inability to convert goals to the amount of chances we create in games. Although most of us understand that this is a long-term project with anything from sixth upwards deemed as a success at the start of the season, we find ourselves fourth in the Premier League with a five-point gap to fifth place.
The problem is that we have thrown so many points away this season with our last two Premier League games being perfect examples; losing 0-1 to Newcastle with a sucker punch goal conceded in the last minutes of the game and a 2-2 draw with Arsenal when we found ourselves ahead with just minutes to spare. Take a look ahead to the upcoming fixtures we have in the next month starting with next weekends fixtures and Leicester away - we need to try and sort this out sooner rather than later to stop the rot.
One of the biggest problems this Chelsea squad have had this season so far is finding levels of consistency. We looked like we had found it when we had embarked on our eight-game unbeaten run earlier in the season, but from the moment it ended we have struggled ever since. We can be excellent, dominant and great going forward for twenty to thirty minutes in games to then ease off, play slower and make life easy for the opposition to defend.
Last night with a 2-0 lead over Championship side Hull City, it happened again and having scored a goal from a deflected free-kick giving Willy Caballero no chance, Chelsea found themselves holding on to the win to take us through to the next round having been put under intense pressure.
With the transfer ban lifted and the club free to make new signings, Chelsea have been linked with signing a new striker at the club with the likes of Olivier Giroud leaving once someone comes in. Is the problem the actual strikers at the club though or is it something different?
Tammy Abraham has weighed in with his fair share of goals in his first full season for Chelsea in the Premier League. Think about it, how many clear-cut chances has he missed so far? If anything, you could count them on one hand. So, is Tammy the problem? The answer is no.
For me, and it’s become increasingly clear as the season has moved on, I have noticed that when the players get in and around the box, they are either greedy or play the wrong ball. We find ourselves in good positions and take the shot on when it’s clear that there is someone in a better position either inside the box or making a late run into the box. It’s such a waste it really is. Then we do choose to make that pass we play the wrong ball or overplay things which again is a waste of another opportunity.
With squad rotation in the modern game and players looking to impress when given a chance is there a downside? Does it lead to players becoming selfish in these areas to try and get a goal to force themselves into the managers thinking when others are in better positions? I guess that’s the nature of the beast when players find themselves out of the side though isn’t it.
I think a striker would be the start of change and if we can bring one in this week it would be perfect. The problem Frank Lampard and Chelsea have is that people are aware we have had a ban, have money to spend and will ask for astronomical sums of money in order to sell their players. Can we convince someone to sign this week?
Overall, I still think the rest of the team need to stand up here to be counted. They need to ensure they play their part and put the team first, as we did at the beginning of the season, to stop being greedy and to ensure that if someone is in a better position – you play the ball to them. For me that’s the biggest issues we have here and not the actual striker position.
Frank Lampard expressed his pure frustration in public and in full for the first time this season and it’s about time the players that are already here sat up and took notice. Things MUST change!
