With all the negativity regarding Chelsea this season so far on social media in particular, I feel that it’s important to remind everyone of our expectations at the beginning of the season and the fact that Chelsea FC 19/20 are a work in progress under Frank Lampard.
Eden Hazard sold, David Luiz sold, a transfer ban, heavy intake of youth into the first team squad and a management team with no experience in the Premier League, Chelsea fans knew that this season would see a significant shift in expectations from the previous fifteen glorious years at our football club. For the first time the ultimate goal at the start of the season had changed from a title challenge to finish in the top four or Europa League.
That change in mentality was massive in many ways. For the club to accept the change and to acknowledge that was huge. To employ a legend of our football club and to accept that he would need time to implement his way was also another big statement from the owner Roman Abramovich. It was a sign of change, a statement of intent and one that the majority of Chelsea fans were excited about.
So why has that changed now?
The problem we have on social media in particular is that there are those Chelsea fans that only know Chelsea to be successful in the last fifteen years. They have come to expect a title challenge and anything else isn’t good enough. These people have chosen not to accept the current situation, the mentality this season and the new long-term project.
Every single one of us wants to see the club challenge for trophies, we want to see our club continue to have the levels of success we have become accustomed to but most of us accept that will probably not happen this year. If we can achieve a top four finish that would be amazing, a good cup run a bonus, but we know we find ourselves way behind the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City.
It’s so important that Chelsea fans stick together, take stock of the situation, revert back to our expectations at the beginning of the season and see where we are now DESPITE everything. We find ourselves in a great position to regroup and go again.
Trust in the process, believe in Chelsea, Frank Lampard and the players. It could be a lot worse!
