Antonio Conte has made his intentions known that he is more than interested in signing Chelsea defender Marcos Alonso and is reportedly primed to make a bid to take the left-wing back over to Italy. With reports that he was previously interested in Emerson, why the sudden change to Alonso?
Well according to various reports in the media, Frank Lampard is reportedly open to offers for Alonso which is something of a surprise in my view. Although he has an obvious weakness defending one-on-one, he has proven himself to be effective going forward scoring goals, creating chances and being a real goal threat. Surely there is a place for him at Chelsea?
Another argument for Alonso is the fact that Frank Lampard has been willing to chop and change formations this season with the players available in our squad. We have seen varied formations including the 3-4-2-1 formation looking to utilise wing-backs going forward. Without question, in my view, Alonso is the strongest wing-back we have within our ranks. Obviously, there is necessity to defend playing that role but not so much as going forward whereas playing on the left of a back-four defending first is the priority.
The questions we have to answer here are the following for me:
1. Is he that bad?
2. Who would be his replacement?
