English football’s top flight has long been branded an unpredictable competition and this year is no exception. But fans are of the opinion that this year is particularly erratic. For the first time since 1955, 15 clubs have won one of their opening three matches and the last time that 19 or more teams had three points after three games was back in the early ‘80s. What is it about this year’s campaign that has made it so difficult to call? We’ve taken a look at this year’s Premier League and what has contributed to the outcome so far. If you have some free football match bets, this probably isn’t the safest league to bet on, purely due to the unpredictability.
The fact that so many clubs in the competition are already up and running has left the table with a congested feel that feels unusual – there’s normally a clearer breakdown of winners and losers, even though we’re talking about a small sample of games at this point. It might seem like that’s no bad thing. In fact, one could argue that a lack of predictability is a good thing. There could be plenty to welcome about the notion of Crystal Palace winning against Manchester United just six days after losing against the newly promoted Sheffield United, or that Newcastle defeated Spurs.
The days of Manchester United and Chelsea being unbeatable on home turf have long gone, which has contributed to the unpredictability of the League. Any team can beat any other at any match, which is why no-one can truly predict who will come out on top. The reason for that is financial – the money being pumped into the Premier League has levelled out the playing field, meaning that teams that were once low down on the table now have a shot at succeeding against the big clubs. When Abramovic took over, there were no players that Chelsea couldn’t add to the team and no club they couldn’t beat.
Likewise, Man United were unbeatable many years as a result of being a global business. But today, the teams at the top of the table in the Premier League are more balanced, making it fair game for anyone who is willing to put in the effort, and the money, to get it. Leicester City’s 2016 win is testament to this. The gulf at the top and the very bottom is much smaller than it once was, making it a truly unpredictable tournament. What does this mean for fans?
The number of vital players with outstanding skills is at its peak and the coaches are also of top quality, meaning that the League is at its best in terms of sporting brilliance. It’s great news for matches though, as everyone could be a surprise in terms of the outcome, the iconic moments and the star players. As the teams really get into their stride as the campaign progresses, fans will no doubt be treated to a few unexpected surprises, making for some of the most exhilarating football we’ve seen in years.
