Having seen some negativity surrounding Mason Mount across social media I wanted to ask YOU the Chelsea fan reading this post how you feel about the impact he has made in our first team and the Premier League this season?
I have to be honest. Having seen Mason Mount perform as well as he did for Derby County in the Championship under Frank Lampard last season, surprising many with just how influential he had become in his first full season in England in arguably one of the most competitive leagues there is, I had my doubts whether or not he could transfer that excellent form a step up to the Premier League and Chelsea. Now, at the beginning of December, five months into his first full season in the Premier League, it's safe to say that should not have worried because he has been outstanding.
For someone of a certain age to come in and play with the level of confidence he has done from the word go has been so good to see. It's clear that he is thriving under Frank Lampard once again this year knowing that he has full confidence in him. He plays with confidence, he plays with assurance and you can see that he believes 100% in his own ability - just look at his goal against Aston Villa the other night as an example.
The situation regarding the transfer ban with Frank Lampard and Jody Morris at the helm has really helped to accelerate the involvement of our youngsters without question. To have the belief in their ability is one thing but to then give them a go this year together has proven to be a masterstroke. Yes, we still have areas that we need to improve - everyone does - but these guys have come in, settled down together and step out onto the pitch week in, week out as if they have been doing so for years.
Think back to the last ten to fifteen seasons at our club. Think back to the days of Cech, Terry, Lampard and Drogba as the core/spine of our team, then the players brought into the side around them, there was never any real impact being made by our youngsters at all. You would see one or two of them in the lesser cup competitions or involved in the final few games of our seasons - that was it. When they did get a chance it would have been very difficult for them to make any real impact. This season is totally different and the comparison is remarkable it really is.
Take a look at Mason Mount and his impact in the Chelsea team first and foremost followed by his impact in the Premier League to England under Gareth Southgate. It's been immense. As I said he was give his chance and has grabbed hold of it with both hands. Reece James, Fikayo Tomori and Tammy Abraham all the same - with Callum Hudson-Odoi and Ruben Loftus-Cheek still to make their return to regular first team action. All of them have made the transition into our first-team with ease it has to be said and that's a massive compliment to our coaching staff at the Academy, the first team set up this season and most importantly of all the combination of Frank Lampard & Jody Morris.
Mason Mount has so much to his game already and that's important to note. Frank Lampard spoke the other day of Mount and was keen to remind everyone that despite his finish being outstanding the other night, making it five Premier League goals so far, his game is much more than goals. He said:
“I don’t think Mason should be measured solely on goals.
We had an international break and he did not start a couple of games but goals are part of his game and his all-round game in the second half is what we expect of him.
“Because it wasn’t just the goal, it was the threat he had from the edge of the box, his link-up and his winning the ball back in high areas which is his game." - Frank Lampard.
Frank Lampard is spot on in my opinion, his work rate without the ball is outstanding, he is always leading the press high in the opposition box forcing them to play the ball earlier than they feel comfortable. With it, he has excellent ability to pick a pass, to link-up with someone in attacking areas to create space, to create an assist and to finally put the ball into the back of the net himself.
It's the fact that Mason Mount has been at Chelsea Football Club since the age of 8, has had this determination to be a professional footballer first and foremost, to then keep working hard to be the best that he can be and then hope that one day it will be good enough. To be given opportunities to go out on loan at Vitesse and Derby - take both and make the very best out of each one, to then come back and make an impact at Chelsea playing with a level of enthusiasm that is infectious on those around him which then transcends into the stands with the supporters. I cannot understand for the life of me why there would be any negativity at all!
Mason Mount has surprised me with how well he has settled into life in Chelsea's first team and with the impact he has made this season so far. He has been outstanding and he will continue to get better and better.
What a player we have at our football club!
