Here’s a question for you Chelsea fans, based on the other teams around us fighting for the top six and their struggles so far this season, are we now in a strong position?
There is plenty of talk of the players in the squad from the Academy and everyone has been expecting (and accepting) a bumpy ride this season. Having lost to Manchester United on the opening day of the season, then dropping important points at home against Leicester and Sheffield United all of us were slightly concerned if we are honest. However, we have managed to pick ourselves up with a much improved performance against Liverpool, a big win over Wolves followed by another three points last weekend against Brighton and find ourselves with eleven points sitting seventh in the Premier League, just a point off of fourth place.
Things are looking up for Chelsea with the important return from injury of N’Golo Kante, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Reece James to bolster the options we have to choose from. If you then add Emerson and Ruben Loftus-Cheek to the equation, both long-term absentees, I believe we are strong with a real depth of quality that our main rivals do not have.
Obviously we look at Tottenham, Arsenal, Manchester United, Leicester, Wolves and Everton as our main rivals for the top six with both Liverpool and Manchester City nailed on finishers inside the top four in my opinion. Out of all those sides we are fighting with, Leicester for me look the strongest at the moment with each of the other sides battling for form and consistency with Manchester United in real trouble. OK Tottenham and Arsenal are level on points with us and a single point ahead but look at the state of them right now.
Do we look stronger than all those sides? Do we have strength in depth compared to them? Do we have better options and most importantly of all, the ability to change our tactical approach and formation to cope with the demands of the Premier League on a week-to-week basis? This for me along with the average age of our side is key, as I do not see the other sides around us being able to do or to be the same.
I personally believe we are stronger than those around us, we have much more depth to our squad, have better options throughout the side and as Frank Lampard has demonstrated on numerous occasions already, have the ability to switch formations from one game to the next.
A final thought from me before I get the time to (hopefully) read ALL your opinions on this. Frank Lampard can only work with what he has at Chelsea because of the transfer ban and there is conjecture in the game currently as to whether he would have trusted in the youngsters in the same way if he had big money to spend. However, he has got on with things working with what he has.
As for all the other managers of these sides we are battling with this season? They have all spent money and find themselves struggling for form, consistency and confidence.
As for Chelsea, we will only get stronger!
