Frank Lampard singled out Fikayo Tomori in his post-match press conference yesterday and described his performance as “class”. Is it too early to say that he has impressed so much in the games he has played, that it is now impossible to leave him out moving forward?
I must be honest, up until recently I had been calling for the combination of Toni Rudiger and Andreas Christensen to be selected at the heart of our defence. Toni Rudiger as the man-marker, the one of the two centre-backs that will leave his position to step forward into challenges/interceptions to win the ball with Christensen the one to sweep up/cover behind him in case he isn’t successful. Now, after his performance against Mohamed Salah yesterday, Fikayo Tomori is beginning to change my opinion.
Frank Lampard spoke of his performance yesterday and said:
"I also want to single out (Fikayo) Tomori for me personally.
To go up against Mo Salah who is lethal in every sense and deal with him for pace in the mind, the way he played, everything he did today I thought was class and they are the signs I’m looking for individually.
"I thought his performance was brilliant and Alonso I thought came on and did very well, it’s not easy coming on in a big game like that but I thought he did very well."- Source: Football London.
If you now take a step back to last weekend and think of his first ever Chelsea goal against Wolves, it’s easy to say that Fikayo Tomori has hit the ground running despite Chelsea’s inability to keep a clean sheet. Six games into the Premier League season, we have conceded an average of two goals a game (with the four at Manchester United playing a huge part in that) and you get better odds of us conceding at the moment that you would at casino sites.
It’s clear that at Chelsea Frank Lampard has a real problem with trying to find the right solution with recent injuries to Emerson, Tomi Rudiger and now Andreas Christensen not helping. Think of Reece James and the fact that he is working his way to being fit and there haven’t been any real positives at the back to focus on up till now with Tomori being the shining light.
Fikayo Tomori gave an individual performance yesterday that demonstrated all of his qualities which, over time, will continue to grow and get better still. He has excellent pace, he can read the game well to spot the danger coming – as he did time and time against Salah especially in the second half. He plays with a level head and has a calming influence about him, he isn’t fussed or someone that loses his head to make a rash challenge when it’s not needed (think of Christensen’s tackle of Mane that led to the Liverpool opening goal for example). Finally his use of the ball is really good also, very rarely gives it away and is more than happy to ping the ball 30-40 yards in front of him or out wide to the full-backs.
Last season Fikayo Tomori was named as the Player of the Season at Derby and, at Pride Park, there had been a chant that had developed over the course of the season by the Derby Fans which demonstrated how highly he was regarded there - “You’ll never beat Tomori”.
I am certain, it will not be long until it’s sung around the ground at Stamford Bridge so I encourage you to check out the latest soccer betting on Tomori and Chelsea this season.
