It’s Chelsea’s and Frank Lampard’s Achilles heel the inability to keep a clean sheet which has cost us a massive TEN POINTS in just six Premier League games. We need to do something about our defence and fast.
There have been disappointing goals to concede, sloppy goals and goals like the second one yesterday joke defending it really was - while you are there you should check out toponlinecasinos.co.za – frustrating goals that we know that could/should have been prevented. Chelsea switch off in important moments and Frank, Jody and the coaching staff need to find the right solutions sooner rather than later here.
Is it down to the players that are playing as a collective defensive unit? Is it down to individual mistakes? Or is it down to the formation we are playing and not having enough protection for the defensive line?
You can never account for individual mistakes and let me just say here that this is not a forum for people to come on and dig players out, but no-one expects mistakes to be made that are punished the way we have been this season so far. Most of the goals we have conceded could have been prevented and that’s the disappointing/frustrating thing for all of us. You would get great odds at the moment on best NFL Betting sites rather than hope for a clean sheet from Chelsea!
Frank Lampard has spoken of being focused throughout the ninety-minutes on more than one occasion. We switched off against United and were made to suffer for it, Leicester, Sheffield United, Valencia and now Liverpool. Even against Wolves, 4-0 up and cruising we did the same and conceded two-goals. Is it down a lack of leadership there in the defensive unit?
Personally, I think it’s a bit of everything with us at the back in this moment of the season. Yes, there needs to be leadership there and some people may say that we lost two leaders in Gary Cahill & David Luiz. They have a point with one of those players and not the other as far as I am concerned as you only must look across to North London to see what’s happening there. Toni Rudiger seems to be a natural leader, we have Cesar Azpilicueta and dare I say it Fikayo Tomori who demonstrated the fact at times during the game yesterday. Kepa seems to be very vocal which is important as at times your goalkeeper needs to take charge of the defence inside and on the edge of his box.
Yes, the individual mistakes have cost us also. Think of both free kicks given away yesterday, both in dangerous attacking areas on the edge of our box to put us under intense pressure but it’s also been about the collective, the defensive unit as a whole and their positions where they have been caught out.
Is the answer to put more bodies there? To stick with what we did against Wolves and play three centre-backs? Does this give us a better defensive shape? Now at Wolves we pushed our two full-backs into midfield out wide to enable us to play with a flat four across the middle of the pitch in front of the back three, to enable us to play with two number-tens floating around the main striker.
There will be an argument that we cannot play with a three at the back when you go up against the likes of Liverpool yesterday and Manchester City who adapt the 4-3-3 formation. Why? All we do is drop our full-backs slightly deeper, change on the number tens to another central midfielder and either play with a number ten in a free-role behind the striker or play with two up front.
Should we continue with the back-four? If we do, then who would be the best starting eleven we have when everyone is fit? Do you expect Reece James for example to walk into the Chelsea team in place of Cesar Azpilicueta and hit the ground running? Would you want to take Azpi’s experience away from the side? What about the left-back? Who would be the better option playing down that side if we play with three at the back or with wing backs? Finally, who out of the four centre-backs we have available should be selected to start in the back four or which three do if we play with a back three?
Chelsea have a run of games coming up in the Premier League that are favourable which on paper you would consider us favourites to pick up three points and hopefully our first clean sheet of the season. However, as we all know, you need to fight to earn the right to pick up a single point let alone all three and we know that Frank, Jody and his coaching staff are working harder than ever to make it happen.
What do you think is the reason for the goals we have conceded and what do you think is the right solution?
