Chelsea travel to Norwich in the lunchtime kick-off tomorrow afternoon in the Premier League and with just a single point from our opening two games, there is slight pressure on Frank Lampard and his players to deliver a much needed three points.
Don’t get me wrong here, I am not about to jump on the negative bandwagon that seems to have evolved around Chelsea with all the doom and gloom merchants out there. As I posted up this week, this season under Frank Lampard is one of patience and to allow the manager to get it right however, a game against a newly promoted side in the Premier League, no matter how they have started will be identified as three-points (without being disrespectful to our hosts).
Chelsea’s problem so far this season has been our lack of potency up front coupled with our vulnerability at the back. We need to solve the issues we have had at both ends of the pitch and fast. I wonder if the manager will look to make some important changes to the side as he looks to tighten things up while becoming more potent at the same time?
Toni Rudiger is now pushing for a start having come through intensive training in the past few weeks and having played for ninety-minutes against Liverpool for the Under-23’s the other night. As I have posted at the same time as this article, Andreas Christensen seems to have nailed down one position in our back four and I expect Rudiger once he is back into the side to do the same.
Up top could we see Michy Batshuayi being given a start after his two-goal haul against Liverpool that Toni Rudiger featured. In my view, he has only ever done what has been asked of him here and has scored goals in the Premier League and in the Bundesliga. Tammy started against Manchester United while Giroud started last Sunday against Leicester so it’s his turn in my book.
Another one of my articles posted at the same time as this one, indicates the fact that for me both Jorginho and Kovacic have become more important than ever and the manager could be tempted to revert back to the 4-3-3 formation that served us so well against Liverpool last week. As a result both could start alongside N’Golo Kante tomorrow.
In our two games so far, we have had real good periods, it’s a case of sustaining that for ninety minutes which has proven to be our biggest problem, especially our first home game of the season last Sunday. To switch off after twenty-five minutes of the first-half is scandalous really and we are all looking for an immediate reaction. If we are to get anything out of this game we have to first match the hunger/desire of the opposition - we must want the game more than they do, then we need to be defensively solid to their obvious goal-scoring threat up front, to then look to impose our game on them in attacking areas by creating numerous chances.
We have a decent run of games coming up before we play Liverpool at the end of September and already it’s a must-win game against Norwich. Anything less would ramp up the pressure on Frank Lampard and his players.
What we need right now is a solid, professional performance that sees us impose our game on the opposition. We need to dominate the ball early, use the ball quickly into attacking areas and to force them backwards. If we can then get a goal to go ahead it should calm everything down so the players can enjoy themselves and play expansive football that should cause Norwich numerous problems.
That’s what should happen, that’s what we want to happen, let’s hope it does!
