It's been a couple of days now since the game against Leicester last Sunday and having time to think even more about the current situation as Frank Lampard looks for his first three points, I wanted to try and gauge as many opinions as possible from you, the Chelsea fans worldwide, as to who YOU want to start against Norwich this weekend.
Since that result there has been plenty of news, comment, opinion and speculation of Frank Lampard's squad and some big news that should give everyone at the club a lift. Having been compared to playing with Basketball tactics, to having a real lack of firepower, a cutting edge and a team that is some way off where they need to be, you would think that everything that surrounds our club is all doom and gloom at the moment.
The events of these passed couple of days should go some way to re-energising the squad with news that Toni Rudiger played ninety minutes for the development team against Liverpool on Monday night. Michy Batshuayi who has been non-existent so far under Frank Lampard this season also played the game scoring two goals and assisting the other in a good performance as we won the game 3-0. As we all know beating Liverpool in any capacity is always nice!
So to yesterday and confirmation that Callum Hudson-Odoi has rejoined full first team training at Cobham with images floating around Social Media of him getting involved being closely watched by Lampard and his coaching staff. The more options we have for places in the team and most importantly of all, the more competition for the start will only prove to be a benefit for the team. Let's not forget that Frank Lampard has been keen to point out that players will earn their place in the starting eleven based on merit - if they are playing well and working hard the place is theirs. It's clear that one or two have their position in the team under threat at the moment.
Finally the last of the squad updates this week so far and it looks as though Davide Zappacosta has sealed a loan move to Roma back in Serie A this season which is great news personally for him and even better news for Reece James who's path to a first-team start at Chelsea looks ever closer, we just him to get fit, then match-fit as quickly as possible.
So to Norwich and their impressive start to their Premier League return with a goal-scoring striker in a rich vein of form with four goals from his two starts - something we can only wish for at Chelsea at the moment but, as I posted yesterday morning - patience is key for ALL of us this season.
There is the obvious threat from our hosts this weekend but, having watched their first game of the season and how they crumbled at Tottenham it's clear there are areas that Chelsea can expose because let's face it we do have that quality within our ranks. We just need to ensure we can perform like we did against Liverpool and to an extent at Manchester United - over a sustained period.
The good thing about our squad this season in addition to how Frank Lampard wants his team to play, is that we have flexibility, we can chop and change our formation from the 4-2-3-1 to the 4-3-3 which I personally believe gives us a better balance right now. Without question, as it will be the same for every single game, we need to play compact defensively, negate the space between our central defenders and midfield but also look to play expansive football when we have possession. Just think about that for a second and how difficult that could actually be for ninety minutes.
The added bonus this week (in addition to news of Toni Rudiger, Michy Batshuayi and Callum Hudson-Odoi, is the fact that this will be our first full week of training and preparation we have had at Cobham since the season started. We have had little time to recover and prepare in-between the games we have played so far. In saying that, it means that another below-par performance this weekend would offer little as an excuse as we expect to see Chelsea looking fresh and ready to go for this one.
So to the team and who YOU think should start? Kepa is a certainty to remain in goal without question, I would give Emerson a break and play Marcos Alonso at left-back. Andreas Christensen has pretty much nailed down the position he plays now since the departure of David Luiz and it will now be interesting to see if we stick with Kurt Zouma who had a better game against Leicester. Cesar Azpi will start in this one but it's clear that he needs to do better. If Reece James was fit his place would be under threat.
In our midfield it's clear that N'Golo Kante should start every game now, of that there is little debate but who should get the nod alongside him? Once again it depends on our formation for the game in question. Against our top six rivals especially away from home, Chelsea should adopt the 4-3-3 formation that dominated Liverpool the other night. The combination of Kante, Kovacic and the impressive Jorginho worked well in tandem and that should be the trio we stick with playing that way for the time being.
However, in the 4-2-3-1 formation that we should adopt whenever we feel we are stronger than the opposition (on paper anyway), it's Kante +1 and on Saturday I would go with Kovacic. The attacking three in-behind the striker I would go with Ross Barkley in the number ten role, Willian on the right and Christian Pulisic on the left to give us pacey goal threats hopefully between their midfield and defenders. Up top for me I would go with Michy Batshuayi who lets face it, has done pretty much everything asked of him since he has been here or out on loan. He is proven to score goals at this level so stick him in!
So, at this early stage my starting eleven for Norwich would be:
Kepa, Azpi (c), Christensen, Zouma, Alonso, Kante, Kovacic, Willian, Barkley, Pulisic and Batshuayi.
