As Frank Lampard begins his first pre-season campaign as Chelsea Manager and with all the talk over what he could or couldn’t achieve this season, I wanted to ask the Chelsea fans the question - What would be classed as a successful season this time around?
I want to start this article by saying that Chelsea fans have taken a huge amount of stick of late because of what happened with Maurizio Sarri and the apparent treatment he received from a section of the Chelsea support. What is important to point out here is that the main reason for the Chelsea fans’ frustrations was because of the football - once the rest of the Premier League realised how they could try to prevent Sarriball.
There were no tactical adjustments but the same nine players playing week in, week out with the same two substitutions being made as like-for-like replacements. As one player was replaced by another, the player coming on was asked to operate the same role. It became easy for the opposition to prepare for both beforehand and also in-game.
When things were not going well and you look to the manager to try something different, it never happened with the two successive away games being beaten 0-4 at Bournemouth followed by 0-6 at Manchester City. That was the point that Sarri lost the fans, I stand by what I said at the time, if he changed things, tried to adapt to England and the Premier League for the first season to bed-in and settle into the role here, he may still be here right now.
So to Frank Lampard and whether or not you believe that he would be put in the same position? I think it’s safe to say that he would not stick to a single way of playing, he WILL BE willing to change things in-game and adapt to different circumstances as they come - make sure you check for signupbonuses.co.uk here in addition to searching for the latest Chelsea odds.
By the sounds of it, the two predictable traits of Lampard’s Chelsea side will be a hard-working side looking to dominate games but that’s as far as the other managers in the Premier League will know for the first few months of the season at least.
Frank Lampard spoke of being competitive as the minimum expectation here at Chelsea and he is right. That will remain as the minimum requirement in the hope that it can take us somewhere near or around the top four. As far as the Champions League goes it will be to qualify from the group stages with a major challenge made for one of the domestic cup competitions.
It’s all well and good saying that Frank Lampard has two seasons grace before he is really judged by the Chelsea faithful with one Chelsea Fan TV regular stating that “the Chelsea fans levels or expectations have never been lower in recent years” but I beg to differ because, being honest, I do not know how I will react at the time if we are watching something we can only wish not to happen.
It’s important to keep the Legendary status of the player and manager separate when it comes to Frank Lampard and Chelsea. Both are very different and should remain so. What Frank Lampard achieved as a player will forever be remembered and celebrated through time and rightly so. Hopefully, what he can achieve here as a manager should be the same.
One thing is for certain, for the first time in a long time, there is genuine optimism amongst the Chelsea faithful again. We hope to see the potential of talent at our disposal in the current first team, returning players from their loan spells and the outstanding talent we have in our Academy finally being given a real chance to shine.
I’d take to be competitive and to be there or thereabouts in the top four as the aim. That as always is the minimum requirement. We have an outstanding squad and now a coaching team that feel the club, feel the supporters and have extensive knowledge of the playing staff. It will hopefully be the base to build a good first season for Frank Lampard - Chelsea Manager.
