With Champions League qualification on the last day of the season and a Europa League win, his first as a manager, it's been a fantastic end to Chelsea's season. I would like to know YOUR opinion on Maurizio Sarri and his immediate future. Should be stay or does he go?
I have to admit that the image of Maurizio Sarri standing behind everyone else getting ready to celebrate with the Europa League trophy, staring at his first winners medal and the smile that followed showed exactly what 30-years of hard work means. There are times when I feel for him, times when despite my frustrations with him as discussed and spoken of in my Vlog posts on my YouTube channel, you can see that he is a proud man who just wants to do well. Finally, on Wednesday night he achieved his first major honour and who knows, it could be the first of many.
So to his immediate future at Chelsea and it's important that we focus on the season as a whole not forgetting what happened in Baku 24-hours ahead of the game. The problem that it's reported that Roman Abramovich has is the fact that he has no connection to the Chelsea fans at all. You think of our previous managers - Conte, Mourinho, Ancelotti, Di Matteo - all of them had a connection and spoke often of their appreciation of the support they received from the Chelsea faithful and built on that as their time in the role went by.
After the appointment of Rafa Benitez and the subsequent reaction from a section of the Chelsea support to him, it's clear that having any signs of something similar does not sit well with Roman. Let's also not forget the very public display of petulance from Sarri in front of the worlds media the night before the final - that wouldn't sit well with him either.
The biggest problem I have (which is mentioned in detail in the video above) is Sarri's refusal to adapt to our League. When he did for two games - switching to a 4-2-3-1 against Man City in the Carabao Cup Final and the following game against Tottenham, it worked giving us more protection in front of our back four giving Jorginho some much needed assistance at the time.
Unfortunately, that tactical tweak was forgotten about and we reverted back to how we have been playing for the remainder of the season. Tottenham, Arsenal and Manchester United had a dire end to their Premier League campaigns and that's how we managed to sneak into third place bearing in mind we dropped NINE points in the closing weeks of the season.
Take away Eden Hazard from our side, as we will have to face next season, and you would have to admit that we would have struggled to finish inside the top four. If anything, we would be fighting for our place in the top six in my opinion.
However, when all is said and done, when the seasons results are entered into the official record books of English/European football, it will note that Chelsea reached two cup finals, winning one of them which turns out to be a European trophy, and finished third in the Premier League in the Managers first season in charge. You cannot argue that having only had three weeks to work with the players before the season started (which is and remains a joke from the club to leave it that long last year!) the Italian has delivered a remarkable result.
With Juventus calling offering him an immediate return to Serie A and a club that is destined for more silverware next season, to Chelsea a team in transition with a two-window transfer ban to deal with you have to wonder what the next few weeks will bring. You can imagine that Sarri would have already met with Roman and the Chelsea hierarchy already.
Maurizio Sarri - the Chelsea manager that has divided opinion amongst the supporters more than any other in our recent history. What do you think he should do?
