There was a time that Manchester United vs Chelsea was one of our stand-out fixtures in any season with both dominating the Premier League title race. Now, with both teams struggling to keep up with the Premier League pace setters in recent seasons, it’s just like any other fixture.
Chelsea’s demise has been recent compared to Manchester United having won the title two years ago. Antonio Conte delivered an unexpected title in his first season with a record at the time of thirty league wins and it looked as though Chelsea had put themselves into a position to build on that and maintain our impressive record since 2003-4 when Roman Abramovich bought the club. For whatever reason it never happened, and we find ourselves in free fall ever since.
As for Manchester United? It’s been five years since their last title win and despite heavy financial investment in their squad during that time, they find themselves as far away from challenging for the title as ever. Players out of form, players on ridiculous wages and a succession of managers who have failed to galvanise the squad since the days of Sir Alex Ferguson, these days anyone will fancy their chances against them.
It’s been a remarkable fall from grace for United being highlighted against Everton last weekend and again on Wednesday against Manchester City at home. United used to have an aura about them, you knew week-in, week-out that you had to be at your very best to have any chance of getting a result on a match day knowing that the best players in the Premier League would literally form a queue to join the established power-house it used to be. Now, they are far, far away and show no sign of recovery.
We have seen in the Premier League that anyone can beat their opponents at any given time and form goes out the window. You need to fight to earn every single point and of course Manchester United could turn up this afternoon and give a performance their supporters are hoping for. However, having lost seven out of their last nine games Chelsea have to be considered the pre-game favourites to continue their poor record.
Chelsea need to be at their best, we need to get everything right this afternoon from team selection, tactics and in-game management to win the game. We have the players to beat United but as we have seen at various times this season, there is no guarantee that we will see the performance that we are more than capable of.
Chelsea have been given a massive opportunity to take a real grasp of their place in the top four with Tottenham losing yesterday and Arsenal’s midweek defeat at Wolves. We have literally blown every other opportunity so far with the opinion that we do not deserve to qualify for the Champions League. Now, at Old Trafford, in arguably the biggest game of our season, we must take three points with just a couple of games remaining.
Come on Chelsea do not let us down again!
