Chelsea blew another golden opportunity to take a firm grip on a top four spot at the end of the season by dropping two points yesterday in a 1-1 draw with Manchester United.
Am I the only one really frustrated with what happened yesterday? We started badly and allowed United to attack us at will which eventually led to the opening goal which was yet another demonstration of our shoddy defending. This was a team that had lost seven out of their last nine games for god sake, we should have looked to dominate the ball early to force them onto the back foot which would have had made their players and supporters nervous.
Our defence was all over the place at times with Toni Rudiger and David Luiz being drawn out from the middle by the runs of Lukaku and Rashford. They found plenty of space through the middle and ex-Chelsea player Juan Mata, playing at the tip of their diamond midfield was giving Jorginho a major problem whether to try and mark him or not.
If anything, we didn’t deserve to go in at half-time 1-1 but for another De Gea howler. At that point, with how we had played so far, it was a gift for us that wasn’t expected, and we should have looked to kick on in the second half to try and take full advantage.
What happened? Gonzalo Higuain offered us nothing other than being caught offside more times than he touched the ball in addition to spending most of his afternoon moaning. For the life of me I cannot understand why he started the game after his antics on the bench last Monday when he was substituted. I keep saying it, Olivier Giroud offers Chelsea much more than he does and he should have started.
As expected, these days under Sarri, we had decent possession in the second half but could do little with it. We moved the ball too slow again, not wide enough using BOTH sides of the pitch and the pace of our attack came to a shuddering halt when we got near their box making life easy for them to defend.
Injuries to Rudiger and Willian are a blow for the Europa League and possibly beyond this week and it’s a chance for Pedro and Christensen to set their stall out now – I just hope Sarri does not decide to stick RLC out wide again.
This season for Chelsea in my eyes has been about missed opportunities and yesterday was yet another to add to the list.
Media pundits and reports this morning talk of Chelsea taking an advantage with their point but I don’t see it like that with two really tough games coming up at home to Watford and then away to Leicester. With the way we are playing, there is no guarantee we will deliver what is needed.
