Maurizio Sarri took time this week to speak of Danny Drinkwater and once again re-iterated his stance that the player has no future at Chelsea under his stewardship as he is not suitable to the system implemented this season. So how does a Premier League winning midfielder find himself in this situation at the age of twenty-nine?
We must ask questions about his signing in the first place and
remember it was when Antonio Conte was here. It was clear that he was not HIS signing
with his involvement in the team last season, so you have to ask was he signed
to boost the quota of English players at the club, those who had trained here
from a young age? If so, £35m is a lot of money to do so but was his quality
ever in question or considered?
It's important to remember just how good both Drinkwater and
N'Golo Kante were in Leicester's title winning season at the heart of their
midfield. Both work-horses, comfortable with the ball at their feet and more
than willing to do the so-called dirty side of the game, both game that team a
platform to build from and players such as Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy to go
an express themselves moving forward.
In the last two seasons at Chelsea, firstly under Antonio Conte
and now with Maurizio Sarri, it's clear that we have been susceptible at the
back. In my opinion it comes from the midfield and having cover in front of our
two centre-backs. N’Golo Kante plays the role of two players with the amount of
ground he covers in-game, but he simply cannot do everything himself. We have
seen that Nemanja Matic struggled, Timoue Bakayoko could never adjust to the
Premier League and Cesc Fabregas for the love of trying could not defend. Danny
Drinkwater last year was never given a run of games to rekindle his partnership
with Kante which potentially could have solved our issues.
To this season and we all know that with Jorginho we have the same
issues we had with Cesc Fabregas. Although he works his butt-off, Kovacic
offers little end-product and Ross Barkley plays with a restriction to his game
in our midfield compared to the freedom given to him by Gareth Southgate and England.
Once again this season under Maurizio Sarri, we had struggled to
remain solid at the back, have issues in front of our back four and with N’Golo
Kante asked to play a different role, we find ourselves well out of contention
to challenge for the title and a fight on our hands to finish in the top four!
I keep banging on about it and will continue to do so (especially
with Liverpool coming up on Sunday) but in the League Cup final against Man City
to the Tottenham game in the Premier League afterwards, Maurizio Sarri adapted
our tactics to not leave us exposed at the back. When one of our midfield three
pushed forward, the other would sit deep next to Jorginho to switch to a 4-2-3-1
formation and it worked. It’s a system that suits our players and those
available in the squad. In that formation, why could we not experiment with
Drinkwater and Kante there? As I said previously, it worked for Leicester so why
not here? Do we not think that would give Chelsea a solid base to what we have
now?
There are those who would believe Danny Drinkwater isn’t good enough
for Chelsea or that he isn’t a Chelsea player. I personally believe those
opinions to be narrow-minded and foolish. Drinkwater, despite his recent issues off the pitch this week, has nothing to prove to anyone other than stay off the drink and head to a casinous online casino instead.
He was invited to leave the club in the summer by Sarri and decided
to stay. OK, that's maybe due his current salary here with the fact that he could have spent some of that money at www.choiceonlinecasino.com, but all the same he has
continued to train and work hard like everyone else and that deserves respect.
If Chelsea do not finish in the top four or win the Europa League,
then we can all agree that it’s a failure of a season and Maurizio Sarri will
be sacked. God forbid that actually happens and we do qualify for the Champions
League next season one way or the other, but if it does happen then you have to
question if Chelsea would actually sell Drinkwater or finally, after two seasons
to forget, and with an impending transfer ban with players expected to leave,
he could finally become an influential member of our first team.
For now, he remains in the shadows as he has done ever since he
arrived.
