Chelsea were beaten at Everton yesterday afternoon in a game that highlights all of our issues once again this season. We should have grasped the opportunity to close the gap to the top four and give us an advantage with a game in hand but, as so many times this season, we failed for a number of reasons.
Make no mistake, Chelsea were dominant in the first half, hit the woodwork and should have had at least a goal advantage at half-time. We outplayed Everton who struggled to get out of their half for the most part. People will talk possession stats, will talk of being in control of the game and Maurizio Sarri himself has openly spoke of the first half being the best we have played this season.
The simple fact remains that once again we failed to capitalise on it, never scored, could not create enough clear cut opportunities and within five minutes of the second half we were made to pay. Chelsea have lacked a killer instinct this season, lacking that killer pass to open the door and as a result have a problem with lack of goals under Sarri.
To think, Eden Hazard WILL leave us in the summer so what are we going to do? Where are the goals going to come from?
Our second biggest problem is a lack of focus and defensive stability. Last week against Wolves I criticised David Luiz for his decision to step forward into making a tackle that he was never going to win leaving Toni Rudiger on his own against two strikers which resulted in their goal. Yesterday, defending set pieces with the ridiculous zonal marking approach, David Luiz once again is at fault.
Playing as part of that defence, your job is to be there to defend your space. No matter what, you ensure you deal with anything and everything there. He switched off, reacted too late to the ball played into the box and was second best as Calvert-Lewin I think it was, won the header for which Kepa parried before it was struck home from close range.
Too many times this season has David Luiz done this. Too many times he loses his head and his focus playing in a key area and its costing us goals time and time again. When he plays with discipline and is focused he is solid. However, that has been few a far between this time around and I would question the thoughts of a new contract.
Their second goal and the award of a penalty was debatable but by then the nail was firmly in our coffin. Despite substitutions and the tactical formation change Chelsea never really looked like scoring which is scandalous for the players we have here.
Maurizio Sarri must take the blame without question. His decision to start the unfit Gonzalo Higuain was a joke but because he knows his style he played! Olivier Giroud who offers us so much more up front knowing the opposition we were to face, he links up play better, is a focal point up top and a presence. He should have started and has to question his position at the club under Sarri who point blank refuses to acknowledge what he gives us.
Jorginho gave a performance that again demonstrates his inability to tackle and to EVER be effective in that deeper position in this country. I dont care what he did somewhere else, it's what he does here NOW that matters and it's nothing. However, he will always play because he is another of Sarri's mates!
To get the best out of what is left of this disastrous season, Chelsea MUST get rid of Maurizio Sarri because he will continue to persist with this tactical approach that does not work, he will start his mates and continue to leave the likes of Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Hudson-Odoi on the bench.
This is and was a joke yesterday and being honest not surprising at all. That's what Chelsea have become under Maurizio Sarri and our play is tedious and boring. It's not the first time I have said this either!
Please act Chelsea now!
