Chelsea travel to Manchester today to take on Pep Guardiola's side looking to regain top spot in the Premier League. All I want from Maurizio Sarri and the Chelsea players is to be the team that we all know we can be to give a good performance.
Despite the fact that we beat Manchester City and are the last team to stop them scoring at Stamford Bridge, our form has been inconsistent. Awful one minute to brilliant the next, I just hope that we get to see the latter from our players especially now that we have a potent striker leading our line.
I wrote a post in the week suggesting that Maurizio Sarri could consider the use of Eden Hazard in our false-nine formation again, as he did at Stamford Bridge. The tactical plan worked that day but here at the Etihad, would it repeat itself? I am not so sure.
I personally believe having witnessed two of the most dire, defensive Chelsea displays that I can remember as Antonio Conte set his team up to face Manchester City both home and away last year, that the best form of defence is attack. We now have the players, the attacking threat and we need to unleash it against this team who I believe are not the best defensively.
As Arsenal proved last week, you CAN attack City, you CAN create chances and when you do you MUST make them count. In Gonzalo Higuain we finally have a potentially lethal presence in and around the box that given an opportunity and space to have a crack at goal - he will every single time.
Set-pieces today should give us reason to optimistic also. This lot have proven how poor they are at defending them and we need to capitalise. Whoever starts at the back whether it's Toni Rudiger or Andreas Christensen, they will get their opportunity and they need to make sure they get it on target.
Defensively I can tell you all now that I know if we are going to be ready for the fight today by watching David Luiz. His ongoing feud with Sergio Aguero is one we all can't wait to watch but in the big games recently, he has left his position and made a ridiculous tackle giving a foul away on the edge of our box to invite earlier pressure on us within the first five minutes. He needs to be focused and disciplined here like he was under Antonio Conte against City in the his first season in charge when we won the league. Luiz was outstanding that day and we need a repeat performance.
We also need N'Golo Kante to play closer to Jorginho to assist with dealing with City's attacking threat when we do not have possession of the ball. They will get their opportunities and we need to ensure we remain as compact as possible. If City get space in front of our back four then forget it.
The build-up to the game would have you believe that Chelsea need to contain City, to play defensive if they are to get anything out of this one. I beg to differ. Get out there Chelsea and attack this lot, be the attacking threat we all know we can be, take them on, create chances and put them away. We have an opportunity to score two, three or even four here.
Get out there and do it. COME ON CHELSEA!!!
