With the transfer window coming to a close,
the odds are hot for who will be signing on or leaving Chelsea this season. Chelsea
have already snapped up Gonzalo Higuain from AC Milan. The former Real Madrid
and Juventus hotshot didn’t seem to adapt well to playing for Milan after his
role in Argentina’s somewhat disastrous 2018 World Cup run. The Higuain signing
has triggered the sale of the out-of-favour forward Alvaro Morata to Atletico,
so it would seem that Higuain is a straight replacement. The big signing so far
has been Borussia Dortmund forward Christian Pulisic
for a total of £58 million, but they’ll be loaning him back to the German club
until the end of this season, so fans won’t be seeing him in blue until next
season.
The exit of Victor Moses also means that
you could currently put Chelsea at a net-loss in talent over the course of the
transfer window, which for fans used to seeing their team on the perimeter of
the top four will come as a shock. All this suggests that ambitious manager
Maurizio Sarri will be eyeing up a number of targets. While the West London
club has been extremely solid so far, with just 23 goals conceded, it’s the
other end of the pitch where they’ve struggled.
On-form Bournemouth striker Callum Wilson
has been strongly linked with a move to Chelsea with sports betting
sites giving good odds of 7/1. The 26-year-old has been on a sparkling
goal-scoring run that saw him earning an England cap last year. That’s exactly
the kind of thing that the Blues could do with, having been a little lacklustre
in front of goal. However, after a small knee operation, the move might be
ruled out for this transfer window at least.
Watford’s skilful French midfielder, AbdoulayeDoucoure, has been having a stellar season and hasn’t been quiet
about his desire to play for a bigger club. Doucoure could solidify Chelsea’s
midfield and provide the team with a greater range of options in the middle of
the park, with odds still available on him for 7/1. However, it would seem that
Chelsea would need to make a huge bid to tempt Watford to sell and with it
being so late in the transfer window, selling Doucoure now wouldn’t give them
much time to recruit a new replacement, potentially condemning them to an
unexpected relegation battle. As such as important player to Watford, it seems
unlikely that Chelsea will get lucky.
The big ‘will he, won’t he’ story of the
Chelsea transfer window has been the ongoing courtship of Eden Hazard by Real
Madrid. Hazard has expressed his desire to play for the Spanish giants and
Blues manager Sarri seems to have paved the way by saying of Hazard “if he
wants to go, he has to”. But would Chelsea really be willing to let go of their
best player without sufficient time to sign a replacement? Odds are currently
6/4 for him to head to Real Madrid, with 11/10 to stay at Stamford Bridge.
