With the January transfer window approaching and plenty of names being touted with Chelsea either heading into or out of the club, there is one name I want to throw into the mix - Aleksandar Mitrovic. It's my view that he is as close to Diego Costa as you are going to find!
We have all watched Chelsea through modern times and in particular since Jose Mourinho's arrival in 2004. At that time we adopted the 4-3-3 formation and played with the target man up top in Didier Drogba who, as we all know, has become a Legend for what he achieved here.
He became the benchmark at the club, someone who set the standard for leading the line and someone that Premier League defenders up and down the county used to have nightmares about playing against.
He could literally do it all whether it was to bully/dominate defenders with his presence, to win headers, to hold the ball up in possession and bring others into the game, to run in-behind the defence or to simply take people on himself - Drogba was world class. In fact, I never ever thought we would be able to replace him or have anyone come near him once he left us until that changed in the summer of 2014 when we signed a striker from Atletico Madrid.
Diego Costa came here without being able to speak a word of English, with a reputation for being hostile as many You Tube videos of his in-game feud with Pepe and Sergio Ramos at Real Madrid had proved. With almost a goal every two games for Atletico and his performance against us in the Champions League (remember the clash with John Terry), we knew that he was a real talent.
However, none of us would ever think that he would be able to replicate the style of Didier Drogba and in my view he did perfectly. He too could bully and dominate defenders even if at times he crossed the line. He could win headers, hold the ball up, run in-behind and had the ability to create literally something from nothing - he became pivotal in our success in the three seasons he was here.
When Diego Costa left our club, just as Didier Drogba had previously, it left a massive void in the team. We no longer had the real focal point up front that would/could dominate and make the position their own for the season. The likes of Eden Hazard, Willian and Pedro suffered because they had lost their target man to feed off of - that was until Olivier Giroud came along in January, but it's no coincidence that our title defence fizzled out once again and we finished outside the top four last year.
Now as much as Olivier Giroud has been excellent for us since he walked through the door, I still firmly believe that we need someone in the Drogba/Costa mould and I believe that to be Aleksandar Mitrovic currently at Fulham.
From what I have seen of him so far ever since he arrived in England it's clear that he has the potential to have the same impact at Chelsea. He is only 24 and has the best years of his career ahead of him. He has time on his side to mould his game into what we need having already made an impressive start to life here.
Think of Fulham's poor season so far, it would be far worse without him having scored seven goals in sixteen games so far. He has proven that he can hold the ball up with his back to goal. He is strong, at times dominant, good in the air and has an eye for a goal. Yes, there are areas that need to be improved on but I believe that he has what it takes to build on. Imagine - he would only cost around £25-30m which by current standards is hardly anything.
There are reports that he has become unsettled at Fulham since the departure of Slavisa Jokanovic and next month could be the ideal opportunity to make our move as Claudio Ranieri tries to put his stamp on things there to improve the team as a whole - with Gary Cahill being a reported target.
We may not get him next month and it may be the case that Chelsea aren't interested in Aleksandar Mitrovic, but for me he has to be the next in line. What do you people think?
