Granted we have all only played one game and it's far too early in the season to get some sort of idea of where we stand compared to the other teams in the Premier League and our direct rivals for the top four. Redbet are offering their take on how they see the season playing out which is worth checking out. However, I wanted to ask the question because let's face it, Chelsea waited far too long to sort out the situation with Antonio Conte and Maurizio Sarri in addition to late summer signings.
First and foremost let's take a look at what we know of Maurizio Sarri as a Manager. He has done well without any form of success and if you watched my 5-Minute Chelseadaft news video posted HERE, you will see that the Napoli President had criticised him for being one-dimensional, refusing to rotate his players from the 12-13 that featured week in, week out.
His footballing principles are to be admired and we are all hoping that he can implement his style here as quickly as possible. If we can get anywhere near as effective going forward as his Napoli side were then we are in for a treat this year. However, our squad is massive, with players chomping at the bit to break into the side, to prove themselves and if Sarri decides to stick with the same players he could face unrest heading into the January transfer window.
I personally believe that we have a good enough squad to be successful again. David Luiz has managed to win favour and his position back into the team which is a bonus as long as he plays with the same levels of discipline he did in Antonio Conte's first season. Willian and Eden Hazard look like staying which is great news and the three new signings are solid and improve the options we have.
If then add to that the return of Ross Barkley to full fitness, Ruben Loftus-Cheek back in the fold and determined to prove his worth to Chelsea this season and Tammy Abraham who has a chance to stake a claim, then I believe we are more than capable of finishing 3rd - at least 4th.
As we all know it's a long season and anything can happen. We need to ensure we keep players fit and try to cut down on suspensions. We need a little piece of luck along the way but, we have every chance to have another successful year this time around. It would be interesting to see what bookmakers think of our chances.
For me: Top four as the minimum and to challenge for ONE of the cup competitions - I don't mind which one.
What do you think?
