The Premier League season starts in two weeks time and if we are honest, we are surprised that the club had only made two signings so far this summer. Is this a sign that the club is more than happy with the current squad we have?
Let's face it, two seasons ago we were Premier League champions and the bulk of that squad still remain at the club despite Diego Costa and Nemanja Matic being sold a year ago. Think of the signings the club made last summer, the number of additions and the number of returning players from being loaned out for the season. Chelsea have an abundance of talent at their disposal and in my view a more than healthy squad as it is for the new season.
There will be those of you reading this that believe that certain players should be sold and that we need more signings. What happens if they actually stay here? You would expect that Chelsea would have been contacted about Eden Hazard by now but nothing has happened. We know that three bids from Barcelona have been rejected for Willian so the intention to keep him is there and the only player who could possibly leave could actually turn out to be Thibaut Courtois which let's face it, is no big deal really.
There are those players that were signed a year ago that we never given a chance to shine here under Antonio Conte because it's apparent that they were club signings (just like Rob Green has turned out to be according to reports this morning). The likes of Danny Drinkwater and Ross Barkley really have a chance to start again under Maurizio Sarri. They have a year to settle down at Chelsea, get used to their surroundings and the quality that is here week in, week out to now hopefully kick on.
Tiemoue Bakayoko has the chance to really kick-start his Chelsea career under Sarri. I felt at times last season he didn't really understand his role or that it never suited his natural style so this is a big, big season for him. Despite what we saw for the most part of last season, he is a real talent, an imposing figure in midfield and playing in Sarri's 4-3-3 formation, should be suited to his natural game.
I've always personally felt that Chelsea are much more suited to playing 4-3-3 since the days of Jose Mourinho back in 2004. It seemed to give the players a natural balance between defence and attack giving us some fantastic attacking football. It's no secret that Pep Guardiola has played with that same formation at Barcelona, Bayern Munich and now Manchester City, Real Madrid have adopted the same formation for years and Barcelona the same. The possibilities are endless with our current playing squad because we have two players for each position and each player suits the roles they are given.
At the back - Cesar Azpilicueta/Victor Moses on the right, Marcos Alonso/Emerson Palmieri on the left, David Luiz, Andreas Christensen, Gary Cahill and Toni Rudiger in the middle.
Jorginho/Danny Drinkwater as the pivot. Cesc Fabregas, N'Golo Kante, Tiemoue Bakayoko and Ross Barkley as the box-to-box type midfielders getting up and down or playing just further forward.
In the wide positions Eden Hazard/Pedro one side and Willian/Hudson-Odoi the other.
Up front Alvaro Morata if 100% fit has already proven that he can finish in the Premier League vying with Olivier Giroud/Michy Batshuayi.
Now this list does not include the likes of Davide Zappacosta or any of our loan players. If Danny Drinkwater decides to leave then you would replace him with Ruben Loftus-Cheek for example. But the point I am trying to make is there for all to see we have a strong squad with maybe just one more attacking wide player if Hudson-Odoi goes out on loan.
Chelsea are continuously being linked with all sorts of names at the moment with reports that Roman Abramovich and Marina Granovskaia are travelling around Europe trying to get reported targets signed but again I am not so sure that we are going to see an influx of players between now and the end of the transfer window.
That said, with our current squad set to take on the favoured 4-3-3 formation this season and having explained the quality I believe we already have here, do you agree that we do not need a number of signings and that the club are happy with what they already have?
