Chelsea may have given themselves a chance of getting a Top Four finish, but their problems with actually scoring goals has defined their season.
Their top scorer only managed 12 goals, and if this is the best that your most excellent scorer can manage, it means something serious for the season overall. This is the reality, and the statistics speak for themselves.
Conte Seems to Be Clear About It
As far as Antonio Conte is concerned, it’s more than clear what the Chelsea Football Club’s biggest problem has been this season: punters who enjoy the sports betting NZ has to offer will well remember his finger-pointing at his attackers. This occurred after his team’s marginal win at Swansea, and while Olivier Giroud, the January signing, made all the difference in the game against Liverpool, Conte was very probably looking at the visitors’ front three players in envy.
While they drew a blank in the Stamford Bridge game, Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane, and Mohamed Salah have accrued 56 goals in the Premier League between them over the course of this season. The top three scorers for Chelsea, on the other hand, Marcos Alonso, Alvaro Morata, and Eden Hazard, have a combined score of only 29.
The Goal Score Should Be Higher
Chelsea’s total goal score should be much higher: they are third from the bottom in the Premier League as far as the percentage of clear-cut chances they’ve managed to put away over the season, says Opta. Let’s underline that point: only Southampton and Crystal Palace have wasted more chances where their players were more than reasonably expected to be able to score, and it is not even a case of fitness, but more one of finesse.
Player Standings for Chelsea
In terms of player standings, Morata, who has out in the game against Liverpool, has the worst Big Chance conversion rate as far as the strikers who have scored a minimum of ten Premier League goals this season are concerned.
The Spaniard’s finishing was highly criticised after some outrageous misses in the January game against Arsenal, and he was also off-target when Chelsea played Burnley last month. Only two other players have missed more conspicuous chances this season, and the statistics do not read well for Chelsea attackers.
Interestingly enough, it’s the players around Morata that hint at a bigger problem at the Football Club, which goes far beyond some wayward shooting. Morata has missed just one fewer definite opening than Harry Kane has this season, and Salah, who received the PFA Player of the Year Award, has missed the most, thanks to his inability to capitalise on a total of 21 big chances.
On the other hand, he is also the second-highest scorer! And just behind Kane! These two players, the best scorers in the Premier League, are the ones who have been presented with the biggest and best chances.
Perhaps it’s a problem with supply lines for Chelsea? They have created the sixth most big chances in this season, only eight more have-to-score moments that Crystal Palace managed, and the latter has been struggling with relegation for the majority of the campaign.
