The transfer deadline closes tomorrow evening and Chelsea have a decision to make, should they pay a fee of around £25-30m for Edin Dzeko or Olivier Giroud for half that figure with both players aged 31 or stick with Michy Batshuayi?
Looking from the outside in, I would imagine that a deal for Olivier Giroud is the favourable option bearing in mind that he seems quite happy to settle for life on the bench over in North London.
I say that because you would find it hard to imagine that Edin Dzeko would be prepared to do the same or to play second fiddle to Alvaro Morata who is to remain our number one striker at Chelsea. The Bosnian striker is playing week in, week out for the Italian side and let’s not forget that they remain in the Champions League so if he signed for Chelsea he would also be cup-tied having played for Roma and ineligible to play for us in the competition against Barcelona.
Olivier Giroud would be available as Arsenal did not qualify for the competition this season, he has bags of experience playing Premier League football and in my opinion, is underrated for his ability by Arsene Wenger.
For years I have never understood how Wenger had chosen to approach the big games against his top four rivals. It’s obvious to me that in games of that importance against the best teams you are fighting against, that there will be times you are not in possession of the ball and need to remain defensively compact.
At the same time, you need an out-ball, someone who can hold the ball up being physically strong enough to do so to bring others into play and Giroud offers that to a side. For some reason, Arsene Wenger didn’t see things that way and it’s fair to say that he has suffered every season recently because of it.
If you look at both players based on pure ability, then you would have to go with Dzeko as we have seen first hand this season in the Champions League. Dzeko is another player who I believe to be underrated as he never received the plaudits he should have at Manchester City. His move to Roma has proven to be a success and he has put himself right back into the spotlight with his goals.
It’s clear that Antonio Conte does not fancy Michy Batshuayi despite the Belgian scoring twice against Newcastle at the weekend and playing well against Brighton. There is still so much more that the Batman needs to improve on with his game but that will take time. If he is given a regular start in games between now and the end of the season we should see his form improve and his goals and it’s looking like that will be what happens once a deal for Edin Dzeko or Olivier Giroud can be completed in the next 24 hours.
What do you think Chelsea should do here? Who would you like to sign or do you think we should stick with The Batman?
