As negotiations continue between Chelsea and Roma over the signing of Edin Dzeko, it’s being reported in the press that Chelsea have their eye on Olivier Giroud as an alternative.
I am personally hoping that a deal for the Bosnian striker can be completed as quickly as possible as he much more of an all-round option than the Frenchman who has struggled to maintain a regular first team start at Arsenal.
Both have Premier League experience in abundance, both can score goals and both would offer Chelsea the option which everyone believes they are looking for as the target man figure up front to provide an alternative to Alvaro Morata.
I have given a more in-depth opinion on Edin Dzeko previously on here so make sure you check out that post here. Let’s have a look at the possible option Olivier Giroud would give up front.
I am always of the opinion that I cannot understand why he doesn’t start more games for Arsenal especially in the big clashes against top four/top six rivals. Looking from the outside in, Arsenal would be better off having played Giroud up as the Diego Costa like figure for Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil to play off of. For whatever reason, it did not happen, he found himself benched and Arsenal have continued to play their football without that option up front.
Now that Alexandre Lacazette has come in, Giroud is now officially consigned to the bench and only given a start in the cup competitions which is hard to understand as Lacazette is not the type of player who can offer you with an out-ball, someone to hold the ball up and bring others into play and most importantly of all, someone who give you a strong presence up there.
That’s what Chelsea need and have focused their play on for the last thirteen years. First it was Didier Drogba, then it was Diego Costa and now Chelsea are looking for someone to come in and fill that role for the team.
In my opinion Alvaro Morata will eventually give us exactly that in time but isn’t quite there yet and despite my backing throughout his time here, it’s time to acknowledge the fact that Michy Batshuayi is not going to give us that at all despite looking like he has the physical frame to do it.
Olivier Giroud is strong, has the presence needed to do a job here and scores goals. It’s clear he is underrated for his ability with the ball but given the chance to prove himself again, he could be the short-term option we need for the next four months of the season.
I doubt that Arsenal would want to business with Chelsea because they see us as a rival for the top four this season, so it will be interesting to see what happens if the Edin Dzeko deal fails to materialise.
We can all agree that he would be a far better option that Andy Carroll, Peter Crouch or Ashley Barnes!
