Eden Hazard struck twice to inspire Chelsea to a thumping victory over Tony Pulis' West Brom side and move into third place in the Premier League table ahead of Liverpool next weekend.
There has been plenty made of teams struggling to come to terms with the international break with player injuries and general lack of time to prepare for the upcoming game. We've seen on many occasions teams that on paper should be taking three points come unstuck or put in a dire performance. In this instance, Chelsea carried their momentum from victory over Manchester United two weeks ago into this contest at the Hawthorns and were too good and too strong for our hosts with the game virtually over at half time with the score at 0-3.
Here are the three most important factors that Chelsea fans take from this weeks game:
1. Formation.
Everything feels right with the way we play at the moment just as it did when Antonio Conte made the famous switch to a back-three last season. By playing the three-man midfield giving Cesc Fabregas freedom to roam with Tiemoue Bakayoko and N'Golo Kante playing more defensive (at times), it suits the balance of the side perfectly.
Cesc Fabregas is now further forward and out of that deeper area. He now gets himself into space between our defence and attack giving everyone an option to pass to. However, it's when he collects the ball in space that he really comes into his own. Mark my words, if we continue with this formation this year, he will smash the assists record for a single season.
Eden Hazard playing as an out-an-out number ten has lifted Hazard and given him the freedom to go and play. He drifts all around the pitch and also is more than happy to drop deep to collect the ball. Similar to Cesc Fabregas, his football intelligence and his ability to read the game enables him to step into space, to collect the ball and run at the opposition causing mass panic as he did with our first goal in this one.
2. Andreas Christensen.
There was speculation that David Luiz could be recalled after missing out against Manchester United but Antonio Conte stood firm and rewarded the same players who had played so well in that game with the start in this one - Andreas Christensen maintained his position in the middle of our back three.
Two good performances, two clean sheets and Christensen is really growing in stature at Chelsea with every single minute that passes. He looks calm, he looks composed and is already showing signs of his ability to read the game.
Liverpool on Saturday night will be another big test but one I don't think any of us have a concern with.
3. Alvaro Morata and Eden Hazard combination.
Plenty had been made of the relationship and understanding Eden Hazard developed with Diego Costa over recent seasons. If anything, the signs that the relationship and understanding he has with Alvaro Morata this early into the Spaniard's career here are looks even better, more devastating and much more effective.
We saw a glimpse of it in Madrid as we beat Atletico but you have to admit they are at a stage now where it's becoming to look like second nature. The Morata flick for Eden Hazard's first goal, knowing exactly where he was and where he would want the ball was outstanding.
It's the flicks, the step-overs and the general awareness of where each other is has become so impressive of late. I honestly believe that if we stick with this formation, if they both manage to avoid injury and suspension and continue to build their relationship, it could become key along with Cesc Fabregas in our title challenge this season.
The final word.
As much as I would want to follow the lead of the press core that have reported on the game talking of the future of Tony Pulis, I choose not to because it takes away just how good our performance was.
Chelsea produced some flowing football which was played at a good tempo. It was incisive which is what we want, we created chances and scored four fantastic goals (it was nice to see Marcos Alonso score again). Alvaro Morata continues to impress with his performances playing week in, week out he really is as good as I thought he was if not better.
That's four wins on the spin and if we can beat Liverpool this weekend, with the run of games we have leading up to the end of the calendar year, another lengthy unbeaten run IS possible!
I fear you have it all wrong CD. I haven't read the media reports yet but from previous weeks I'm confident that our crisis continues. My guess would be something along the lines of.......
ReplyDeleteThe WBA defence was as laughable as Stokes and Forests, Chelsea love scoring against pub sides, a more realistic test comes against Liverpool next weekend or even mid-week against the European giants Quarabag. Luiz looked bored on the bench and obviously wants out as does the "injured" Musonda, both of whom are unhappy with Contes tactics. Another noticeable absentee was Kenedy who has been largely ignored since upsetting the entire Chinese population. Hardly surprising given the Chinese relationship with North Korea and the potential nuclear threat now hovering over Stamford Bridge as a result of his actions. Meanwhile Conte continues to battle with the board over resources having lost his best friend and Allie Emanalo. In order to stabilise Chelseas traumatic season things need to change sooner rather than later or Conte could be the next to be shown the door after Pulis. Final score WBA 0 Chelsea 4.
