Tammy Abraham has declared that his main goal
is to break into the first team at Chelsea after he won his first England
call-up this week. Abraham has been leading the line with aplomb during his
loan spell at Swansea and has notched four goals in 10 appearances. His form
caught the eye of England boss Gareth Southgate and he has been rewarded with
inclusion in the England squad for the games against Germany and Brazil. If he
continues his upward march, the likes of Alvaro
Morata and Michy
Batshuayi could be looking nervously over their
shoulders.
Morata bagged the winner against Man Utd at
the weekend and earned redemption after a six-game goal drought. During that
period Chelsea tumbled down the table, but they are now back up to fourth and
will need Morata to perform a lot more consistently if they are to make up a
nine point gap on runaway leaders Man City,
who swept Arsenal aside at the weekend. Meanwhile, Batshuayi has been a
bit-part player during his time at Stamford Bridge, despite arriving for a fee
of £33 million. He has shown flashes of brilliance, such as scoring the goal
that won the Premiership last season, hitting the winner against Atletico this
campaign and bagging a hat-trick against Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup.
But his spell at Chelsea has been blighted by inconsistency and Antonio Conte
was furious with his poor showing in the Blues’ shock defeat at the hands of
Crystal Palace last month. He is 24 now and cannot remain inconsistent. If he
does he will be out as Chelsea are ruthless with even slightly under-performing
players.
Breaking into the first teams setup at
Chelsea is a notoriously difficult task and there have been very few graduates
from the youth academy during Roman Abramovic’s
reign. In fact, not a single youth player has gone on to nail down a place in
the starting 11 (John Terry was already well established by the time Abramovich arrived) so the odds are massively against him. Even the likes of Romelu Lukaku
and Kevin De Bruyne, brought to the club as youngsters, could not make the cut
and had to move elsewhere. How Chelsea fans must wish their club had shown more
patience with youth as Lukaku and De Bruyne are now two of the best players in
the league.
However, Roman Abramovich wants the club to start
developing world class players, so Abraham
may well get his chance, alongside the likes of Ruben Loftus-Cheek – another
Chelsea loanee that made the England squad. “My main focus is Swansea but
pushing on, my main target is to be in that Chelsea squad,” said Abraham.
"It's not going to be easy, you look at the players that are there, but
you have to keep pushing and keep working as hard as you can. I want to show
the world what I'm truly made of.”
That is fighting talk and Abraham will gain
invaluable experience at Swansea this season as Paul Clement’s men battle
doggedly against relegation. The Swans are 19th in
the table and look in trouble as they have scored just seven times in 11 games.
The one glimmer of hope for them is provided by Abraham, who has netted more
than half of their goals total and always looks their main threat. He is very
sharp in front of goal, with great movement, quick feet and instinctive feel for
where the goal is. Abraham is 9/4 to score at any time against Germany, behind
only Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy in the list of England players most likely to
grab a goal. Make
sure to check 5dimes before placing action on the game,
but that looks a good bet as he is going from strength to strength and should
receive far better service than he does at Swansea.
