Since taking Chelsea over in 2003, Roman Abramovich has hired an incredible ten managers in fourteen seasons and has sacked nearly all of them.
There is a general opinion from the outside that the Chelsea job has become a poisoned chalice knowing what has happened to many of the managers that have been employed by Roman Abramovich since he become owner of this club back in 2003.
You look at this list of people that he has employed and subsequently sacked - it's an extensive list of some of the biggest managerial names:
Claudio Ranieri - Replaced in 2004.
Jose Mourinho - Sacked
Avram Grant - Replaced
Luiz Felipe Scolari - Sacked
Ray Wilkins - Temp charge and replaced
Guus Hiddink - Short term contract.
Carlo Ancelotti - Sacked
Andre Villas-Boas - Sacked
Roberto Di Matteo - Sacked
Rafael Benitez - short term contract
Jose Mourinho - Sacked
Guus Hiddink - short term contract.
Antonio Conte - 2016 to present.
It's fair to say that when you look at some of those names and what they achieved here - to then be sacked literally months later you can understand the general opinion to a point.
However, our results (apart from the 2015-16 season) have been good as we have picked ourselves up, re-focused and got stability back in addition to results with some being trophies at the end of the season with the main one being Roberto Di Matteo leading the team to the Champions League in Munich.
So to Didier Drogba who has been speaking of all the managerial appointments when asked recently talking to a French Radio Station. He was asked of the situation he was faced with on numerous times at Chelsea and if he ever personally spoke with Roman Abramovich about it.
Drogba responded by saying:
"Everyone says Chelsea isn’t very stable. But in modern-day football, there is no coach who lasts more than three or four years at a club.
I asked him [Abramovich]: “We have had how many managers in how many seasons?” He replied: “But Didier, each time I have done it, we have got results”.’ - Source: Metro.
That's the thing, he actually did and most of the decisions he made benefited Chelsea apart from Rafael Benitez!
Simple, to the point and with the record to show for it - You can't argue with the decisions made by the Owner!
Easy argument for Abramovich to make as you cant argue on the basis of what we haven't won during his reign. Who knows how we'd have fared had we stuck with a particular manager?

RDM was a superb footballer, I loved watching him play. He was also the least talented manager we've employed under the Abramovich regime. Even Drogba admitted that the players "managed themselves" under RDM - although he didn't admit to them doing exactly the same under AVB but in a negative manner.
Benitez did an excellent job at Chelsea in extremely difficult circumstances.
Bottom line: Benitez is a far better manager than RDM ever was, including their time at Chelsea.
