Chelsea will not win the Premier League this season after witnessing poor performances in some of the big games against our rivals this season.
However, Saturday evening's second half display against Liverpool, in addition to the disappointing performances against Manchester City and Arsenal reaffirms my view that as much as I would love for it to happen, Chelsea will not win the Premier League this season if they continue to play like that against our top four rivals.
Yes we were fantastic against Tottenham away, also against Manchester United at home and if anything those two performances should have been the benchmark for how we are to approach the big games moving forward.
Unfortunately, on the three different occasions I have mentioned, we have found ourselves playing too defensive, sitting too deep to protect our back-three and as a result Eden Hazard and Alvaro Morata have found themselves drifting out of the game.
We all witnessed the really poor performance against Manchester City as we gave the visitors too much respect, sat deep and allowed them to play. On that day we never once imposed ourselves enough on them, we never played anywhere near the way we could with fast, flowing attacking football. We were too laboured and lost the game - Three points dropped.
Against Arsenal we couldn't find a way to break them down. They set up with three at the back and three in midfield looking to negate the space in front of their defence and were successful in doing so. We never played expansive enough, never changed our style or approach to try and cause them enough problems whereas last season we did - Two points dropped.
So to Liverpool on Saturday night and the most frustrating game for me. We had an excellent chance to take three big points and blew it. The first half was good for us, we dealt with the Liverpool threat which was hardly anything if we are honest but, on the counter-attack we looked really dangerous through Hazard and Morata.
So to half-time and I wanted to see Chelsea come out and really attack Liverpool but it didn't happen until we found ourselves a goal down. We sat back, we played ten yards too deep and gave up possession to Liverpool. We gave them opportunities to attack us rather than force them backwards and as a result those two became bystanders in the game.
As soon as we made the changes, the game changed, Chelsea became dominant, Liverpool sat in defensively and we took advantage to get back on level terms! It should never have been at that point we should have been attacking them to take the lead and hold of the game - Another two points dropped.
Until we can get Hazard and Morata to play consistently well in ALL of the big games by playing as we know we can then we will continue to drop points in the return fixtures. Something needs to change with our mentality in these games and until it does, we will not challenge for the Premier League title this season.
CD I think you are over-reacting to this game,Anfield has-and-always been a tough place to get a win for any team,I don,t think we will be to far of the top of league come the seasons end,as I,ve said I think it,s M C to lose, but you have to bear in mind the outlay city paid out for pep in allowing him to go for the players he wanted, where as we like many a year/before played catch/up yet again to get players in.there,s a way to go yet cd,and we,ve seen it before with clubs seemingly running away with it,even ourselves last year seemed to have it in the bag early/doors but very nearly got pegged-back.it ain,t over by a long way so lets keep going and push-on.i,m happy enough with Conte, yes he gets it wrong sometimes but so do all the others,it,s football and why we are all passionate about it.....
ReplyDeleteWe don't win the league by beating big teams. Just beat 7th-20th teams home and away. You will get 84 points and fight with the big teams.
ReplyDeleteWe lost against Burnley and crystal palace. Those points dropped hampered our title hopes not a draw at Anfield.
Conte gets a lot more right than he gets wrong and I'm loathe to criticise but I'm beginning to think that behind his modern day thinking, formations and tactical awareness, lies a thoroughbred Italian, raised on defensive football, struggling to be restrained.
ReplyDeleteI never saw us as Champions this time around after the last transfer window where others fared much better than ourselves. I did however see us as strong contenders, alongside the usual suspects, for a top four finish. It's going to be tight but with 15 points still up for grabs against our main five rivals, our approach to these games could prove decisive.
We need to tackle these games, whether home or away, with a far more positive attitude. No more selecting an extra defender, no more packing the midfield with ball winners, stick with a balanced side with sufficient creativity to start on the front foot and hurt the opposition. Do this and we'll be fine, show too much respect and encourage them to play to their strengths, then we're in trouble.
There is nothing to fear but fear itself!
