Chelsea have been searching for a replacement for the outgoing Steve Holland since the summer. With news that Andrea Pirlo will retire from football in December, could he become Conte's right-hand man at Stamford Bridge?
It would be a fine appointment in my view with Pirlo adding his wealth of experience and knowledge of the game to our backroom team. The guy is world class and has spent years making the game look easy. He could have a massive impact and effect on our players and would be someone that would command instant respect because of what he has achieved.
Speaking recently of Antonio Conte and of his plans for when he retires after playing for 22 years, Pirlo said:
"His attention to detail is impressive.
He also manages to give you convincing explanations about things. One of his 20-minute video sessions is worth three days on the training ground. You immediately understand what it is you have to do.
Over the year he improved, with his desire to win and doing everything to the best of his ability. He is one of the best, absolutely.
I'll be back in Italy in December.
Conte's deputy? They say things, I have ideas, but give me time to decide."
Having played for Antonio Conte for three years and playing for him in the Italian national side, Pirlo would know and understand the demands that Conte places on his players, his coaching methods and his playing style.
Speaking perfect English and having spent a year or so playing alongside Frank Lampard at New York City FC, Andrea Pirlo would be well aware of Chelsea. However, now with someone in charge who it's clear he has the ultimate respect for, and given an opportunity, could Andrea Pirlo take his first steps into coaching as Antonio Conte's right-hand man at Chelsea?
Let's see what happens.
