With the transfer window closed, Atletico Madrid unable to sign him or anyone until January and a subsequent loan move falling through, Diego Costa is now "prepared to return to Chelsea".
It's a ridiculous chain of events that has led us to this situation and one that we had not seen at the club for a while. This whole Diego Costa issue has been played out through the media and has been an embarrassment that could/should have been avoided. No matter who is to blame, this should have been resolved in the summer and because it hasn't, we now find ourselves with player coming back to the club who obviously does not want to be here for the next four months until he will bugger off in January!
I personally commend Antonio Conte for standing his ground here especially in January when he made it clear to Diego Costa and his representatives that he would be allowed to leave at the end of the season. I do not buy into all this bullshit that Costa has been spouting about being told over text message that he was no longer part of Conte's plans.
What is intriguing for me is that none of the players have come out and spoken out against Antonio Conte and the decision made. Not a single one of them have spoken of Costa being treated in a negative way by the club or the manager which gives an indication that what the club have stated is 100% true.
Costa was approach by the Chinese in the January transfer window, offered life-changing money to move to the far east which turned his head and he wanted to speak to them. Chelsea rejected the advances of the Chinese side who will remain nameless, offered Costa an extended contract to remain at Chelsea and he turned that down. As a result, Antonio Conte decided that he could not afford to keep someone in HIS team that refused to be committed beyond last season and informed him that he was to remain here until the end of the season to then be sold in the summer when a replacement could be brought in.
It's also important to remember what happened two seasons ago when player power saw the end of Jose Mourinho's second reign at Stamford Bridge. The special one was not strong enough to overpower the negativity in the dressing room, he was not disciplined enough and he suffered the consequences whereas Antonio Conte walked in the door, demanded instant respect, installed the discipline needed and look what happened last season!
So what of Diego Costa's return to the club? Well it's a problem we do not need really and will lead to an uncomfortable meeting with Antonio Conte. I expect that when he does return, Costa will be asked to release a statement to explain that his interviews given back in the summer were false and issue the manager and Chelsea an apology. Whether or not that will happen is another thing but only after that does happen would he be integrated into the first team squad once fit enough because Chelsea HAVE named Costa in our Premier League squad for the first half of the season but NOT the Champions League.
Eden Hazard has spoken recently of Costa and has stated that he would love for Costa to come back to Chelsea to play alongside him once again. He said:
"Diego? We spend three years together and we won everything, not the Champions League but we won the League.
It was a pleasure to play with him.
I want him back but you know I don’t make the decision. But he is a top guy, a top player.
I hope for him in the future he can find a solution and I want to see him on the pitch soon.” - Source: The Sun.
Having been advised by Atletico Madrid, the Spanish Football Federation and his close friends to bury the hatchet, to go back to Chelsea to get match fit and put himself in contention to play for Chelsea up to January in World Cup year, it now seems that Diego Costa has little choice.
Will he come back? Will he issue an apology and can he get himself match-fit to put himself into contention in the first team once again? What do you think?
