Following
the defeat by Arsenal in the community shield on Sunday, a lot of
questions are being asked. It's good to note that since the arrival of Roman Abramovich Chelsea have had the upper hand against Arsenal for the most part. However, in their last two competitive games, Chelsea simply haven't turned up and that's been frustrating thing for all of us.
We need more squad depth and that's clear despite possibly having to wait until the end of the window as posted yesterday. Frank Lampard also believes we need another midfielder. For him, asking Fabregas to play as a major
central midfielder in a two man midfield is too much to ask. When another midfielder plays next to N'Golo Kante, Cesc
will have the chance to play his football. He also believes that Chelsea is in need of
another set of wing backs as it's imperative because of the
number of games Chelsea will be playing this season.
Heading into the new Premier League season (check out all the football match previews online) all eyes are on Chelsea and our lack of squad depth which continues to fill the comment and debate sections of the newspapers and websites we read everyday. The staggering lack of players compared to Arsenal for example was highlighted on the back of the match programme but for me there is not an issue at the moment.
OK, we have Eden Hazard, Tiemoue Bakayoko and Victor Moses missing tomorrow but when everyone is fully fit, we still have a first eleven that in my eyes, is better than most in the league including Arsenal.
What will be interesting to see is the tactical formation that the manager decides to start with because, as we have seen through pre-season while away in the far east, Conte has tried to implement a formation with two strikers at times. We all know his favoured formation is th2 4-2-4 formation and I wonder if he will try to implement it within certain games this season?
One thing that is clear is that Chelsea need to dominate the opposition right from the start of games and take advantage as quickly as possible. Burnley is the ideal start for us (no disrespect to the club or it's supporters) as on paper this is what you would describe as a "home banker" based on the players available for both sides.
A good win tomorrow to kick start the season will do little to shut the detractors up with Tottenham away at Wembley in a weeks time. Only then, after that game will people form an opinion of where we are at so far and if signings need to be made before the window closes.
Our first eleven is not as strong as our obvious title contenders. I've said on here several times that Contes change of system helped cover up individual weaknesses last season. We need an upgrade to both wing backs, Cahill is a liability at times (proved it again today) and Luis isn't good enough for the top level.
ReplyDeleteConte isn't continually voicing his concerns for the sake of it. If the board don't back him he'll be gone by Christmas one way or another.
