Barcelona with mega money to spend before the transfer window closes after the sale of Neymar Jr to PSG have turned their attention to Willian who has been identified as a potential replacement.
It's a story that has been doing the rounds yesterday and concerns me for two main reasons. Firstly it's Barcelona and he is Brazilian. When one of the big two come calling there is always a level of concern from everyone at the football club because of the pure stature of their club compared to ours, because of their reputation in the game and because because of the Brazilian connections over the years with the Catalan club.
Secondly, I am concerned because of Willian's position within Antonio Conte's team. Think about it for a second, it's either him or Pedro that starts because when Eden Hazard is fit he plays. Willian found himself out of the side last season following the death of his mother and the extended time off he was given to grieve. Once he came back, Pedro had really kicked on in the team in his absence and it was virtually impossible to select anyone ahead of him so Willian had to settle for a place on the bench. If he did start games, he was always taken off as he was on Sunday against Tottenham.
I just get the impression that he isn't a nailed down starter week in, week out and with interest from Barcelona being reported, that could be a move that he just could not afford to turn down having rejected the advances of Jose Mourinho to join him up north at United.
I personally hope, as I am sure all of you reading this would do the same, that Chelsea do everything they can to hold onto him because he really is outstanding. What happened last season should be put behind him now and I really hope that he can kick on and thrive under Conte just as Pedro seemed to do last year. We need our best players here to remain in Chelsea blue and to help our title defence and Champions League challenge which after the draw yesterday is not going to be easy.
I seriously hope that Barcelona re-focus their efforts and bid mega money for Coutinho from Liverpool and get rid of any notion of entertaining the thought of approaching Chelsea for Willian. Let's hope the window closes and he is still here.
I also think Willian is a great player and the club needs to do everything possible to ensure he doesn't leave. Remember when we were in deep slump,we can single him out. I am optimistic he'll get back to the top this season.
