There is continued speculation that Antonio Conte wants to sign a backup striker to Alvaro Morata as he prepares to challenge on four counts this season.
Having made four new signings already this summer, we are reading speculation and report that Antonio Conte has demanded FOUR more players to strengthen his squad ahead of the new season. These reports also state Chelsea have agreed to back their man with significant funds which formed part of the negotiations to the new contract signed by Conte a couple of weeks ago.
One of the players who is being linked with Chelsea for a second time having been linked back in January, is Swansea's striker Fernando Llorente who has worked with Antonio Conte previously at Juventus and is someone who Conte still holds in high regard.
There is little doubt that he is a quality striker as he proved last season scoring goals in the Premier League and virtually everywhere he has played. Reports state that Conte would only be willing to offer Swansea £20m for him whereas Paul Clement and Swansea are looking for £30m.
Now I have to question the move for different reasons. First and foremost I cannot see that he will prove to be a success here. OK, he made be able to influence games at times in the air but for me he isn't mobile enough for Chelsea and for what we now demand our strikers to be.
Yes he is good in the air and can hold the ball up but how many times did we see him turn and take on defenders, run at them and beat them? I know it sounds disrespectful and I don't mean this to be but he isn't a Chelsea striker. I would class him as the same as Demba Ba when he was here. Yes he popped up with important goals but his influence on the team was limited to say the least and that's because he couldn't fill the shoes of Didier Drogba. Diego Costa came in and has done so for three seasons, now hopefully Alvaro Morata will do the same. Fernando Llorente is not that sort of player so what are we even bothering with him?
If you want to have a man with the qualities which you think are missing in Llorente, you will have to pay twice as much as Llorente's asking price.
