Nathaniel Chalobah will meet Antonio Conte this week to discuss his immediate future with just a year left on his contract. Will he receive the first team assurances he is looking for?
Nathaniel Chalobah has once again proven his quality and talent over the summer with his displays for the England Under-21's in the European Championships. There is an argument that if he had not been injured and had to leave the field with England leading against Germany in the semi-final, England would have held on for victory and taken their place in the final.
As with plenty of other youngsters at our club, Chalobah has reached a crossroads in his career with just a single year left of his current contract. Sources close to the club have revealed that he has asked for showdown talks with Antonio Conte to seek assurances that he will be much more involved in the first team this season with Chelsea's additional involvement in the Champions League once again.
Initially you would have to imagine that the signs would be good coming back from Conte with the Chelsea manager rejecting moves from Leicester, Napoli and Sevilla to take him on loan last year to keep him involved with our first team. Chalobah made 15 appearances for the club last season with 10 of those being from the bench.
However, the reported move for Tiemoue Bakayoko from Monaco (someone of a similar age) has cast doubts over the future of Chalobah which has prompted a request to discuss his immediate future this week with the likes of Watford and Swansea looking to either sign him on a permanent basis or take him loan for the season with an option to sign next summer.

In my opinion the club should do everything possible to get Chalobah signed to a new long-term contract and give him much more exposure to first team football this coming season. Think of Bakayoko and the reported £35m fee. How did he become a footballer worth that much and someone who has caught the attention of Europe's big clubs? He did it by being given opportunities to play regular football at the top level. That surely has to happen to Nathaniel Chalobah now right?
Let's hope there is a positive outcome from talks likely to happen in the coming days.
